Quilt precuts are prepackaged, precut fabric bundles that save time and add convenience to quilting projects. There are several sizes of precut fabrics.
This page offers articles and free tutorials featuring “layer cake” precuts, which are 10” x 10” squares.
There are so many reasons to use layer cake precuts. For me, the draw has always been that the precuts typically come from a single fabric collection, meaning the colors, patterns, and tones are designed to work together.
Pre-coordinated fabric eliminates the guesswork of fabric selection, ensuring a cohesive look.
Precuts eliminate the need to measure and cut fabric yourself. This is especially helpful for quilters who want to jump straight into piecing or for those with limited cutting space. Precuts save time on cutting.
Using precuts is great for specific patterns. Many quilt patterns are designed specifically for precuts, such as charm packs and jelly rolls. So using them can simplify following the specific pattern and improve accuracy.
Because precuts are efficiently cut from a manufacturer's end of bolt, there is typically less leftover fabric and less waste. This can help keep a quilter’s stash manageable and reduce scraps. If there are squares left, visit our Leftover Layer Cake Projects page for ideas on how to use them.
Using precuts allows the quilter to have a small sample of an entire fabric line without needing to purchase full yardage. It's a budget-friendly way to try out new styles or explore new design collections.
Precuts are ideal for beginners. Beginners often find precuts helpful because they remove two major barriers: fabric coordination and accurate cutting. That allows more focus on learning piecing and sewing techniques.
Layer cakes are not the only precut fabric bundles that a quilter can purchase.
Some common types of precuts include:
