What are fabric precuts?

Not only can fabric be purchased from a bolt of fabric, but it is possible to buy precut fabric in coordinating colors. The popularity of fabric precut collections stems from the fact that they are affordable, easy to use, and are sizes often used in quilting.

The measurements for fabric precuts are below.

  • Fat Quarters: 18” x 21” sized pieces of fabric can be purchased to cut smaller pieces for quilts.  They often come in packs of coordinating fabrics.
  • Layer Cakes: These are precut 10” x 10” squares designed for quilting, coming in a variety of coordinating patterns.
  • Charm  Packs: These quilt packs are a collection of  5” x  5” squares of fabric made up of coordinating or identical colors in each pack.
  • Jelly Rolls: Also referred to as roll-ups or fabric rolls, these are made up of 2 ½” X 42” strips of fabric. Typically there are about 40 strips per roll and come in coordinating fabrics.

Many of the quilting with fat quarters free patterns are found by scrolling down to the bottom of the page, and they use both fat quarters and some yardage.
