It’s no secret that those who love to sew find themselves with a slew of supplies, tools, fabric, thread, and sewing notions. Organizing it all is a must to keep them readily available and in working order.
It’s so disheartening to be in the middle of a project and have to stop to search for a tool because it is not in its “home”!
Luckily, this page has many ingenious ways that show how to organize a sewing room. In a short time, these tips and tricks will have everything organized and ready to use when needed!
After completing a few sewing projects, it’s quickly apparent that lots of scraps have accumulated. In fact, one of the major areas of sewing room organization involves fabric and fabric scraps.
What are some tips for storing fabric?
- Fold neatly: fabrics, especially quilting cottons or other fabrics that wrinkle easily will benefit from careful folding. Neatly folded fabrics allow the sewist to find just the right fabric for projects and the sewing room will look much tidier.
- Keep away from sunny locations: fabrics should never be stored in direct sunlight since long periods of sun exposure will fade the colors of the fabrics.
- Consider fabric weight: if storing fabric yardage, be sure the shelving unit is strong enough to hold the amount of fabric yardage that has been collected.
- Decide how to organize: find out what works for you. Sewists may choose to organize fabric by color, size, or by fabric type.
The sewing room organization ideas below give more than tips for organizing and storing fabric. Other items with storage ideas include:
- Bobbins
- Quilting Rulers
- Scissors
- Thread
- Needles
- Plus more!
Learn how to dispose of needles, organize cords, fold fabric, use pegboards effectively…and the list goes on.
