Quilter's Mat Storage for Small Spaces

Quilter's Cutting Mat Storage Idea for Small Spaces!

Self-healing cutting mats are essential tools for quilters. However, improper storage can damage these mats.

The three most common ways cutting mats get damaged are:

  • Not Storing Them Flat – Rolling or standing the mats on their edge can cause bending and warping, leading to inaccurate cutting lines and inaccurate piece cutting.
  • Exposure to Direct Sunlight or Heat – Keep the mats away from direct sunlight and heating vents, as the heat can dry out and warp them.
  • Placing Them on Top of Objects – This can cause the mats to bend and distort.

How to safely store cutting mats in a small living space

WHAT YOU NEED:

Quilters Mat Storage mats and hangers

here's the solution :

A great way to keep the cutting mats organized and out of the way is to store them in a closet.  Here's how to do it:

Gather your cutting mats

Cutting mats come in a variety of sizes, and most quilters have more than one.  So, gather your cutting mats.Quilters Cutting Mats

Clip the mat to the wooden hanger

Use a wooden pant hanger and clip the mat securely to the hanger.Quilters Mat Storage clip hanger to mat

Hang them vertically in a closet

Store them vertically in a closet, so they hang straight and flat. This method maximizes your storage space.Quilters Mat hung in closet

You may wonder if using clip hangers work as a good alternative.  While they're an option, I don't recommend them as the clips can leave permanent dents in the mat. If you do use them, consider placing some batting between the clip and mat. Quilters Mat and hangersWooden hangers work best for this purpose.

Versatility

These hangers are versatile and can also be used to hang other quilting tools, such as rulers and stencils.  This system keeps everything organized, they are out of the way when you don't need them and make it easy to retrieve when you do need them.Quilters Mats stencils rulers storage

As shown in the following picture, you can store many quilting supplies in a minimal space.Quilters Mat Storage minimal spaceBy taking proper care of your cutting mat and storing it correctly, you can extend its lifespan and ensure it stays in top condition.

With a little bit of creativity and making the most of space, you can effectively organize all your quilting gadgets and fabric with storage solutions like baskets, dressers, shelving, old DVD cabinet,  walk-in closet.  And it makes it easy to put everything away when you're done quilting.

A famous quote often attributed to Benjamin Franklin is, "A place for everything and everything in its place".  This sentiment resonates perfectly with quilters, especially when it comes to organizing their tools and fabric.
