Since we are celebrating Christmas in July, I made this cute fabric yo-yo snowman ornament perfect to hang on a Christmas tree.
This snowman ornament is adorable and easy to make. It would make a cute ornament for an ornament exchange or to give as holiday gifts. Hang them off a present with a gift with a tag as an additional decoration.
The body of the snowman ornament is made from fabric yo-yos. Fabric yo-yos are easy to make by hand stitching using Clover Yo-yo Makers. A bead faces kit is used to complete the snowman ornament.

Inspiration for this ornament
I have this old Santa Christmas Tree Ornament made by my Grandmother. This ornament is made from fabric yo-yos and was my inspiration for making this snowman yo-yo ornament.

INSTRUCTIONS to make the snowman yo-yo ornaments
Step 1: Make Yo-yos from white fabric
You don’t have to use the Clover Yo-yo maker to make your yo-yos but I find it easy to make yo-yos with them. Click the link to learn how to make yo-yos with the Clover Yo-yo makers.
For other methods to make fabric yo-yos, visit our page How to make Fabric Yo-yos.
Using the white fabric, needle, and thread make the following sized yo-yos:
- 2 extra large – 2 ½” wide yo-yos
- 3 large – 1 ¾” wide yo-yos
- 2 small – 1 ¼” wide yo-yos
Step 2: Stack the Yo-yos
Stack the yo-yos to prepare to make the snowman. The top side of the yo-yo is the gathered side and the bottom is the flat side.
The bottom section of the snowman has the following fabric yo-yos:
- Large – top facing down
- Extra Large – top facing down
- Extra large – top facing up
- Large – top facing up
The top section of the yo-yo snowman consists of:
- Small - top facing down
- Large - top facing down
- Small - top facing up
Step 3: Thread beads onto the twine
Cut a 16” - 18" length of twine. I used the twine included in the bead kit.
Fold the twine in half and then thread the two ends through a craft/yarn needle.
There will be a loop at the end of the twine. This will become the loop to hang the ornament. Tie a knot approximately 3” from the loop.
For each snowman ornament, select a face bead, a plaid bead, and a flat bead.
Start by threading the beads onto the twine. First thread the plaid bead for the snowman’s hat, then the flat bead for the hat brim and the face bead onto the twine.
Place the face bead upside down on the needle.
The three beads will look like the photo below. When the ornament is turned right side up, the face will be correct.
Step 4: Thread yo-yos onto the twine.
Next, thread the yo-yos onto the twine starting with the stack for the top section. This is the stack with the three smaller yo-yos.
Put the needle through the center of each yo-yo. It may take a little bit of work wiggling it back and forth to get the twine through the yo-yo since the twine is thick.
Push each yo-yo up against the beads and one another.
Next, take the other stack with four yo-yos and thread them onto the twine. This is the bottom section of the snowman ornament.
Push all of the beads and yo-yos together so there are no gaps. Don’t totally squish the yo-yos through as you want them to be puffy.
Step 5: Tie off the twine.
Remove the needle from the twine and tie a knot close to the bottom of the snowman.
The knot should be in the center of the bottom yo-yo.
Step 6: Add a bow or scarf
To add the scarf, cut an 8” - 10" length of ribbon from one of the ribbons included with the bead kit.
Tie the ribbon around the snowman just below the head. The ribbon can be tied in a bow or more like a scarf.
The Yo-yo Snowman ornament is complete!
