Over 30 Free Serger Patterns and Projects

For those with sergers or overlock machines, this page has many free serger projects and free serger patterns to get excited about.

The majority of these projects can be made quickly because of the use of a serger.  It’s easy to use a serger to make a serger quilt, placemats, cute home decor and so much more.

Learning how to use sergers for hems is a helpful skill, and it’s easy to follow the serger patterns and serger projects below that use the serger to hem items like a circle skirt, an apron, and napkins.

Can you make a serger quilt?

Many people don’t think of using an overlock machine or serger to quilt. However, it is a great way to piece a quilt top. Serging a quilt top is fast, and the serger finishes the edges of the seams so they don’t unravel when the quilt is used and washed.

The good feed system of the serger or overlock machine ensures that points match up well and if using stretchy bias edges, the differential feed is a great help with sewing those seams.

Some people argue that the serger stitch makes bulkier seams. However, the two needle threads in a serger are like the top and bobbin thread of a regular sewing machine.

The only difference is the looper threads. If serger threads are used in the needles and loopers in the seams, there won’t be much difference in bulk.

When piecing a quilt with a serger, use a slightly longer stitch length than is used in quilting.  This also helps to reduce the bulk of the threads.

Once you learn how to use a serger for sewing, the serger projects are fun and simple to make.
