Looking for sewing projects for kids? This is the place to be. With more than 50 easy first sewing machine projects, this page has it all!
You will find sewing crafts for kids that range in difficulty from super-easy to advanced beginner. There is something for every child who wants to sew!
What are some beginner sewing projects?
Those kids who are just starting out to sew will do well making something both simple and catered to their interests.
I remember starting to sew by making doll clothes. I loved my fashion dolls and wanted new outfits and accessories for them.
This page has many free doll sewing crafts including a doll scarf, a quilt for a doll, doll bed pillows, and even skirts for dolls.
The free doll patterns here include clothing and accessories for both fashion dolls and 18-inch dolls.
Another great beginner sewing project is a pillow or pillow case. My daughter made her first sewing project, a pillow case, complete with French seams, when she was in second grade.
Yes, she had lots of help and supervision, but the result was a lovely pillow case that she had chosen the fabric for and wanted to use. And the best part was the pride she had in the finished project!
Other sewing crafts for kids that can be found below are pet pillows, stuffies, cell phone cases, baby bibs, aprons and simple fabric bookmarks.
Free sewing projects for adults can be found on our page of over 600 free sewing projects and patterns.
What are some sewing tips for beginners?
It is important that every sewist, especially those just starting out, thoroughly read through the entire instructions for their beginner sewing project. Kiddos often want to jump in and need to be reminded that reading every part before starting is important.
Teach your child to be as slow and steady in cutting out patterns and fabric pieces. If the pieces aren’t cut out correctly, the kiddo will be frustrated when trying to sew them together.
Kids and adults need to remember that every mistake is a learning opportunity. Seasoned sewists can attest that having to take out stitching and redoing sewing is frustrating. But each time a mistake is made, a lesson is learned.
Everyone makes mistakes sometimes, and sewing is no exception. Let the kids know mistakes are ok.
Finally, remember to have fun with the sewing project! Sewing can become a great hobby for kids and adults alike. Take a look at our topic page, Sewing for Kids, Tweens and Teens, to learn all about the art of sewing for the young sewist.
Keep in mind with the young ones that nobody wants to do something that isn’t fun. I don’t recommend quitting, but if a project is not fun for a beginning sewist, maybe it’s time to pivot and start a new sewing project.
Let’s get those kiddos sewing!! Scroll down to see the many sewing crafts for kids to make. It’s sew fun!
