Finger Knitting Tutorials and Free Finger Knitting Project Ideas

Finger Knitting Tutorials and Free Project Ideas

When I was around 4 years old, I desperately wanted to knit with my mom and grandmother.  It was so frustrating and disappointing when my little fingers just couldn’t maneuver those knitting needles.

That is when my mom taught me how to finger knit. Finger knitting for beginners was just the thing for me!

What Is Finger Knitting?

Finger knitting is a way to knit without needles, which is perfect for kids!  It is amazingly simple and very easy to learn.  Finger knitting projects need only a few simple materials; yarn, scissors, and your fingers!

Finger knitting is sometimes called finger weaving, and it can be done with one, two, three or four fingers depending on the finger knitting project and how thick you’d like the knitted rope.

If you are just learning and want to know how to finger knit, we have a very helpful and informative video tutorial and written photo tutorial with step-by-step instructions below.  Scroll down for our Finger Knitting Tutorial.

As you finger knit, a long knitted tube is formed.  I remember knitting tube upon tube as a finger knitting beginner.  It was fun and kept me occupied, but what I was lacking were fun projects to make with the finished tubes!

Who can finger knit?

Finger knitting is for crafters of all ages. Finger knitting is a fun activity for young children and is a great way to introduce knitting without the use of needles. It will be easier for a child to understand knitting with needles after mastering finger knitting.

Finger knitting is an excellent group project for Scouts, 4-H, school class projects and birthday parties. Need a rainy day activity? Stock up on yarn and let your kids be creative.

What Finger Knitting Projects Can You Make?

On this page, we have put together ideas of our own and those we found for you on the internet, giving you and your kids great finger knitting projects.

JEWELRY:  Check out the finger knitting projects to make necklaces and bracelets.  There is a great variety of necklaces and bracelets here on this page, and they are some of the best projects for finger knitting for beginners.

CLOTHING: Who knew you could make something as complex as a beanie hat with your finger knitting tubes?

This beanie is for more advanced finger knitters; you’ll find it the perfect finger knitting project for those teens and adults who enjoy the art of finger knitting and are ready to move on to a more complex project.

HOME DECOR: With the bath mat finger knitting project tutorial, you will have the perfect, soft mat when you leave the shower or tub.

I love the link to the rope trivets; the use of ¼ inch cotton sash cord gives these a simple and natural feel and will look great in any home.

Don’t miss the knitting pillow trim tutorial to decorate your throw pillows.  This is a beautiful home decor finger knitting project that makes good use of your yarn stash.

Both right and left-handed finger knitters can view the video tutorials to learn how to easily create a large blanket by simply joining the tubes as you knit.  You won’t even have to sew panels together with this finger knitting project.

We here at Needlepointers have our own finger knitting tutorial that uses loop yarn to create a lovely textured blanket. There are so many ways to use loop yarn!  Learn more about this special yarn on our Loop Yarn Knitting page.

Even young children can use one of our headband projects to create their own gifts for holidays and birthdays. Check out the cute headband with flowers!
