WHAT YOU NEED to make an oven mitt:
![Mini Oven Mitts 1 Supplies]()
A circle pattern that measured 8 3/4" will produce a finished 7 1/2" size oven mitt.
INSTRUCTIONS for making mini pinch oven mitt
STEP 1: gather Your Supplies
Before starting, make sure all your materials are ready and your fabric is pressed. Choose cotton fabric since it handles heat well and won’t melt like synthetics.
Since only a minimal amount of fabric is required to create the oven mitt, it makes for a fantastic scrap-busting project.
STEP 2: cutting the fabric pieces
Let's begin by making our pattern template.
Use an 8 – 9-inch bowl or plate to trace a circle onto paper and cut it out to create your pattern.
For one mini oven potholder, use the circle pattern to cut the following pieces:
- 1 piece of fabric for the potholder back
- 1 piece of lining fabric
- 2 pieces of fabric for the hand pockets
- 1 piece of Insul-bright
- 2 pieces of batting
STEP 3: Create the Potholder Quilt Base
Now it's time to sew! On your work surface, layer the pieces in this order to form a quilt sandwich:
- Back piece (wrong side up)
- Insul-Bright
- One Layer of Cotton Batting
- Lining Fabric (right side up)
![Mini Oven Mitts 4 Fabrics Clipped Together]()
Pin or clip all the layers together securely.
Note: The Insul-Bright protects your hands from heat, while the batting adds softness and structure.
Quilt this piece as desired – it’s up to you.
However, quilting the layers together will be much easier if you have a walking foot because the project is quite bulky and the pieces will feed through the machine smoother. But if you don't have one, you can still quilt without it - just take your time.
When quilting, I like to attach a guide bar, which helps me evenly space the machine quilting. Also, increase the length of your stitches slightly.
Be sure to remove the pins or clips as you machine quilt.
As you quilted, the layers may shift a bit. If they do, trim off any batting or fabric to make the edges form a nice circle. ![Mini Oven Mitts 6 Trimmed]()
STEP 4: Prepare the pocket pieces
First, cut the second piece of batting in half.
For each pocket, fold the fabric circle piece in half, wrong sides together, and press the fold. Lay one batting piece inside. Edgestitch along the folded straight edge to secure the batting in place.
Trim any batting that extends beyond the fabric.
Repeat for the second pocket.
STEP 5: Assemble the potholder
Lay the quilted base with the backing facing up. Position the two pocket pieces on top so the curved edges line up with the base edges and the straight edges meet in the middle. Clip or pin everything in place to help prevent shifting.![Mini Oven Mitts 10 Clip Other Side]()
Install a walking foot onto the sewing machine and stitch around the entire outside edge, using the edge of the walking foot as your seam guide.![Mini Oven Mitts 11 Sew Layers]()
STEP 6: Trim, turn and stitch edge
With scissors, trim the seam allowance close to the stitching. ![Mini Oven Mitts 13 Trimmed]()
Turn the potholder right side out, pushing out the edges gently for a smooth shape.
Press flat with an iron, making sure the two pockets are close together.
Next, stitch around the entire circle using the edge of the walking foot as a guide.
When you get to where the pockets meet, sew back and forth a few times to reinforce that area.
This final stitching encloses the seam neatly, leaving you with a professional-looking finish – NO raw edges inside! NO binding needed! And NO hand sewing!![Mini Oven Mitts 18 Two Finished]()
Give it a final press and it’s done! Easy Peasy!
You’ve just made a cute and functional pinch potholder. Wasn’t that easy? One isn't enough. Now make a second one so you have one for each hand.
Once you try them in your own kitchen, you'll wonder how you did without them. Keep a few sets on hand to give as gifts to family and friends. They're sure to be a hit with everyone who received them.
Happy Sewing!
