the hen and chicks pattern
To make this wall hanging, grab your black and white fabric scraps and add a few colorful pieces from your scrap stash to add a splash of color.
fusible Applique - Trace, cut and press
All applique images are full size and ready to trace onto lightweight fusible web, such as Heat n Bond.
Using an applique pressing sheet makes assembling the whimsical images much easier - especially since this design has many overlapping pieces. The pressing sheet helps keep everything aligned and removes a lot of the stress from the appliqué process.
You first trace the applique shapes onto the paper side of the fusible web, leaving space between them. A light box may be helpful for this step.
Then each image was cut out 1/4" from the drawn line.
Next, position the fusible web shape, paper side up, on the wrong side of the chosen fabric and press according to the manufacturer's instructions. Then cut out the shapes on the drawn line.

Finally, place the transparent applique sheet over the pattern and use it as a guide. I arranged and fused the overlapping pieces together with the iron to form one complete applique unit. Once it cooled, I gently peeled the design off the pressing sheet and fused it onto the white background fabric as shown in the pattern.
securing the applique images
At this stage, the applique edges are raw and need to be stitched down to secure them place permanently. The pattern suggests using a zigazg, satin or blanket stitch - either by hand or machine.
I chose to use a machine blanket stitch around most of the applique pieces, with a few smaller pieces, such as the chicken beaks, secured with straight stitching.
CHICKEN LEGS
For the chicken’s feet, I lightly penciled in their placement on the background fabric and hand embroidered with black floss as the pattern suggested.
borders and quilting
After all appliquing was complete, I added the border pieces, then made a traditional quilt sandwich, layering the quilt top with batting and backing fabric. Pinned everything in place and quilted the piece using stippling around the chickens.
And straight-line quilting in the borders.
finishing off
To complete the project, I attached the binding. You can use your favorite binding method. ![Hens and Chicks 7 Chick Closeup]()
Lastly, the button details for the eyes and flowers are sewn to the project.
The finished size is 14” x 28”, and it was such a fun project to make!
Creating this Hens & Chick wall hanging was not only quick and manageable, but also incredibly rewarding from start to finish. The combination of the simple applique technique, playful fabrics and easy quilting makes it a project that any confident beginner or seasoned quilter can enjoy.
