INSTRUCTIONS for this doll dress DIY Project
Using knit fabric for this project makes it easy! This fabric will not fray, so the edges do not need to be finished. Other fabrics that won't fray easily, like fleece or flannel, can also be used.
STEP 1: Fold the fabric square
To begin, lay the square of fabric on the work surface. Fold it in half.![Fashion Doll Dress 2 Fold Square In Half]()
Then fold it in quarters.
This gives you four layers of fabric.
Step 2: Cut the curve
Next, you will be cutting a curved line along the edges that are not folded. With a scissor start on the non-folded edge at the corner, cut a curve around to the corner diagonally across from it.![Fashion Doll Dress 4 Curve Corner]()
Be sure to make the curve large, cutting all of the way to edge of the fabric.![Fashion Doll Dress 5 Corner Cut]()
Step 3: Cut the neck hole
Keeping the fabric folded, cut a small area off the pointed end of the fabric. This is the center of the fabric square and will be the opening to slip the dress over the doll's head.![Fashion Doll Dress 6 Clip Folded corner for neck]()
Open the last fold of the square. The fabric is still folded in half. Use the scissors to cut a one-inch curve into the head opening so it is a bit larger and will be a circular shape. ![Fashion Doll Dress 8 Curved Hole 1 inch wide]()
Step 5: Cut the holes for the doll dress arms
Without unfolding the fabric, lay the doll on top of the fabric with the doll's neck at the hole for the head.![Fashion Doll Dress 9 Lay doll on fabric]()
Turn it around so you can cut small slits for the arm holes. ![Fashion Doll Dress 10 Clip By Dolls shoulders]()
Cut a very small slit through the fold of fabric. There will be a slit on each side where the shoulders of the doll are. ![Fashion Doll Dress 11 Clip By Dolls shoulders 2]()
Step 5: Make a V neckline for the DIY doll dress
Unfold the fabric and cut a small V at the head opening to make a V neckline for the dress. This will add interest to the dress and allow greater ease in getting it over the doll's head.![Fashion Doll Dress 13 Cut with V neck]()
Step 6: Put the dress on the doll
Take the opening for the head and place the square over the head of the doll. Raise the doll's arms and put her arms through the slits that were cut for this purpose.![Fashion Doll Dress 14 Place over dolls head and arms through holes]()
Once the doll's arms are through the arm holes, put her arms down and smooth the dress down around the doll.![Fashion Doll Dress 15 Pull dress down over dolls body]()
The dress can be worn as it is in full fashion, or a strip of fabric can be tied around the doll's waist to give it a fitted look.![Fashion Doll Dress 18 Tie Bow]()
