Time to get the 18" dolls ready for a spa day!
As part of our doll spa day series, this tutorial shows how to make a spa headband to keep the doll's hair out of her face for her special facial on a spa day. Soft terrycloth and a piece of elastic make up this quick and easy sewing craft.
This easy doll spa headband uses only a few supplies that are most likely on hand. Sew this headband on a sewing machine using an old towel or terrycloth and a piece of elastic.
This spa towel headband will fit any 18-inch doll, including American Girl Dolls, Our Generation, Journey, Playtime by Emmie, My Life As, and New Adventures Styles dolls.

WHAT YOU NEED to sew a spa headband
- 4 " X 11" terry cloth
- 4" X 1/2" piece of elastic
- Fabric scissors
- Sewing machine
- Turning stick, pencil, or chopstick
- Sewing pins
INSTRUCTIONS to make a doll headband
STEP 1: Sew the terry cloth fabric
The first thing to do is fold the terry cloth half lengthwise with right sides together. Use pins to hold the sewing edge in place.
Take the terry cloth to the sewing machine and sew the ends and long edge using a 1/2" seam allowance. Leave a three-inch opening on the long side of the strip.
This will be used to turn the headband right side out. Sew part way down the side, back tack, leave three inches unsewn, and continue sewing the rest of the way around, pivoting at the corners.Clip the threads with the scissors and clip the extra fabric at the corners. Don't cut through the stitching.
Step 2: Turn the headband right side out
Next, turn the headband right side out through the opening. Once you have started, you can use the turning tool, chopstick, or pencil to help turn it right side out and push out the corners.
Step 3: topstitch around the headband
First, pin the 3" gap closed with the seam allowance tucked inside the headband.
Topstitching (sometimes referred to as edge stitching) is stitching 1/8" - 1/4" from the edge of the fabric.
Topstitch around the entire outer edge of the spa headband, being sure to backtack at the beginning and end of the topstitching.Clip the threads. The spa headband for the 18" doll is nearly complete.
step 4: attach the elastic to the ends of the fabric
Pin one end of the elastic to the center of one short end of the terry cloth headband and sew it in place.
Making sure not to twist the elastic, pin the other end of the elastic to the other end of the terry cloth headband.Using the sewing machine, sew the elastic to the terry cloth, backtacking at the beginning and end of the stitching. Cut off any loose threads with the fabric scissors.
The doll spa day headband is now complete. Won't it look darling on the doll?
I hope you enjoyed learning how to make this fun project for an 18" doll. Put it on her to keep her hair out of her face for the perfect facial or sauna time!
