INSTRUCTIONS To Make a Doll Spa Mask
STEP 1: Download, Print and cut out the spa mask pattern
Download and print the doll spa eye mask pattern. The pattern link is provided at the end of this tutorial after my signature.
Print and cut out the pattern with all-purpose scissors, avoiding using fabric scissors for this task.
Step 2: Cut out fabric for the doll spa mask
Take the satin or other type of fabric that will be used for the front of the mask and lay it on the work surface. Pin the pattern to the fabric all the way around the pattern.
Using fabric scissors, cut out the fabric around the pattern.
Do the same for the terry cloth fabric.
step 3: Layer and pin the fabric and elastic
Place the terry cloth piece on the work surface right side facing up. Next, pin the ends of the elastic to each end of the terry cloth. Marks on the pattern show where to pin the elastic.
To prevent sewing the elastic when sewing the layers together, pin the elastic in the middle of the terry cloth fabric to hold it in place.
Take the piece of satin or other fabric being used and place it right side down on top of the terry cloth piece so the right sides are together.
Pin the layers together around the outside edge of the spa mask.
Step 4: Sew around the outside edge of the spa mask
Take the project to the sewing machine. Sew using a 1/4" seam allowance around the outside of the mask, leaving a 3" opening at the top.
Remember not to sew over the pins! Sew slowly, especially around the curved corners. The presser foot may need to be raised, and the fabric turned to make a smooth stitch line around the mask.
Step 4: Clip the Corners
Using the fabric scissors, clip off any bulk of fabric in the seam allowance, ensuring not to cut through the stitching.
Now, use the scissors to make little cuts around the sewn mask curves, once again being careful not to cut through the stitching.
Step 5: Turn the mask right side out and iron
Turn the mask right side out through the 3" opening that was left unstitched. Use a turning stick, pencil, or chopstick to ensure that all of the edges are turned out on the whole piece.
Take the project to the ironing board and iron the spa mask. Fold the fabric at the opening in 1/4" and press seam with your iron.
Step 5: Edgestitch around the outside of the spa mask
Take the spa mask back to the sewing machine. Ensure that the raw edges have been neatly ironed in 1/4" edgestitch around the entire edge of the mask. Edgestitching is stitch 1/8" or less from the edge of a project.
Be sure to use a thread color that matches the satin or top fabric.
Be careful not to catch the elastic when edgestitching. Keep the elastic strap out of the way of the stitching.
The 18" doll spa eye mask is finished!
