How to Keep Bobbin Thread from Unraveling

Storing bobbins can be a bit of a problem with the threads going all over the place. One of the things that drives me absolutely crazy is seeing messing thread ends in my bobbin case.

So, today, I will share with you my favorite DIY sewing tip for storing bobbins that will keep the thread ends from unraveling when not in use.

There are so many products available for bobbin storage.  My favorite bobbin storage solution is Dritz lightweight, plastic bobbin boxes (which I've had for over 20 years) that are the most effective for my bobbins. 

These clear plastic bobbin boxes with removable lids are an easy way to keep my sewing room as clutter-free as possible.  They're handy and accessible on a bookcase, right next to my sewing machine, along with other sewing accessories.  

Traveling to retreats and classes using these boxes is easy if you use this sewing tip.

But the thread ends in the bobbin boxes were unraveling and tangling and needed taming.  After a bit of Pinteresting, I discover the bobbin thread holder solution that fits all my requirements:

• The ends of the thread not tangle or unravel
• It's transparent so I can see the thread color
• Inexpensive (I'm always after frugal solutions)
• Will fit my bobbins (Will fit any bobbin)

Does Your Bobbin Storage Box Look Like This?  With the bobbin thread unwinding and a tangled mess. Threaded bobbins are a real pain to keep organized, especially when the thread starts unraveling. I have tried those miniature ponytail holders to wrap around the bobbin but they obscure the thread color.  And the bobbin clamps don’t fit in my bobbin box.

It's easy!!!!  Let me share my super inexpensive solution for stopping the unruly mess with thread holders like these - small rings of plastic tubing.

INSTRUCTIONS for making bobbin thread holders:

STEP 1: purchase tubing

In the plumbing section of the hardware store, purchase some clear vinyl plastic tubing marked ½” ID (inner) x  5/8” OD (outer). From a 1-foot length of tubing, you’ll get anywhere from 35 to 45 rings.

STEP 2: Cut Tubing

You will be making little “Cs” out of the plastic tubing.

First with a scissor (of course don’t use your fabric scissor) cut the tubing lengthwise in half.

After it's cut lengthwise, at one end spread out the tubing and cut off pieces between 1/4″ – 3/8″ wide…it doesn’t have to be exact.  Since the tubing is flexible, it will retain its curve.

STEP 3: Slip Plastic Ring on Bobbin

Slip one plastic piece around each of your bobbins making sure the thread ends are firmly underneath the ring.

Done!  And now here is my tidy bobbin case!

The thing I love best about these little bobbin holders is that because the tubing is clear you can easily see the color of the thread while the bobbins are in the box regardless of how much or how little thread is on the bobbin.
