WHAT YOU NEED

Pattern and other supplies

The Lazy Girl Designs Button Boat pattern can be purchased at a local quilt store or online.  There are links to online sites at the end of this post to the pattern and other supplies you will need for this project.Lazy Girl Designs Button Boats - Supplies

Stiff Stuff by Lazy Girl Designs will also be needed for this project.  The Stiff Stuff keeps the boat standing and gives it a nice shape.

The Heat 'n Bond light will also be needed to fuze the stiff stuff to the fabrics.

Select Fabrics and buttons

To make the button boats, you will need two coordinating fat quarters of fabric.  Our button boats were made with coordinating batiks in pinks and purples.Lazy Girl Designs Button Boats - On Counter

Have fun selecting fabrics for these button boats.  Almost any cotton fabrics can be used from novelty, batiks, prints, or themed designs.

Four buttons will also be needed for each button boat.  Pick buttons that coordinate with the fabrics selected.  Flat buttons work best for this project.  Pearl cotton in a coordinating color will also be needed.

Creating the Button Boat

We cannot give you all of the instructions for making this button boat since this is a copyright-protected pattern.  We can share that the pattern contains detailed instructions and pictures to guide you through making the button boat.Lazy Girl Designs Button Boats - By Sewing Machine

The pattern includes a template to use for cutting the planks.  The edges of the planks are zig-zagged with coordinating thread and sewn together.

Below is a photo of the button boat in progress.  The pink is tape holding the planks together.Lazy Girl Designs Button Boats - Planks

I made four button boats in a couple of hours.  I recommend making several all at the same time as this can be a fast way to make a bunch of them.Lazy Girl Designs Button Boats - On Shelf

Each button boat has four buttons. To quickly sew on the buttons, you can use your sewing machine's zig-zag stitch or button stitch.  If you prefer, hand stitch the buttons.

These button boats would make a wonderful end of year teacher gift.  Add some candies or teacher supplies to the fabric basket and wrap!Lazy Girl Designs Button Boats - On Pedestal
