how to make a dollar tree mesh patriotic wreath

here's what you'll need from dollar tree:

  • 3 rolls 6" x 4 yard Deco Mesh (1 red, 1 white and 1 blue)
  • 14" Wire Wreath Frame
  • Patriotic Bow
  • Foam Stars
  • Pipe Cleaners

Household Tools You'll Need

  • Scissor
  • Hot Glue Gun

step by step INSTRUCTIONS for making a PATRIOTIC mesh wreath:

STEP 1: gather supplies for DECOrative MESH WREATH

For this tutorial, we are using supplies from Dollar Tree, as we did with our witch's hat wreath, but you can get the supplies anywhere. Patriotic Mesh Wreath SuppliesWe used the red, white and blue deco mesh colors because of the patriotic holidays coming up, but you can definitely use this technique in different colors to match other occasions.

A fall-themed, Valentine's Day, Christmas or spring-themed wreath would be so cute with this method.

For this tutorial, we used a 14" wire wreath.  If you decided to use a larger size, you will need additional deco mesh.

STEP 2: Add pipe cleaners to wire wreath

Let's get started!

Begin by attaching pipe cleaners to the wire wreath frame. Twist pipe cleaners to each of the inner and outer wires at each of the cross wires on the frame, making a "V" shape that will be used to secure the mesh.

See the picture below for an example. Patriotic Mesh Wreath Pipecleaners

Twist each pipe cleaner around the wire and the crossbar securely tightly so the pipe cleaner doesn't move along the wire.

For a 14" wreath form you should have six pipe cleaners on the inner circle of the frame and six on the outer circle for a total of 12 pipe cleaners.

Now the wreath frame is ready, and we’re going to shift our focus to the mesh.

STEP 3: Arranging and attaching deco mesh

For this wreath, you will need three different colors of 6″ wide deco mesh. Each color needs to go around the wreath twice.  To ensure you'll have enough mesh to do this, the mesh needs to be cut into two pieces.

To make this patriotic mesh wreath, begin with the blue deco mesh roll.  Start by unwrapping and unrolling the roll of mesh.  Cut the mesh into two long equal strips.  Each strip should be 6" wide by 2 yards long.

Begin with one strip and find the middle,  scrunch the mesh together and tie it down to the wreath frame by placing it in the middle of a pipe cleaner and twisting the pipe cleaner closed.

Now, straighten the mesh and scrunch one cut end of the deco mesh together.   Take the end of the deco mesh and place it into the center of the pipe cleaner directly across from where you attached the mesh to the first pipe cleaner.  Twist the pipe cleaner around the mesh to hold it securely to the wreath.

This pipe cleaner is now considered pipe cleaner #1.

Scrunch together the other end of the blue mesh and also attach it to pipe cleaner #1.

Then, leaving a little space in the mesh so that it’s puffy between the first and second pipe cleaner, bunch the mesh together and secure the mesh to the second pipe cleaner, repeat making puffs around the wreath alternating between the outer and inner pipe cleaners until you reach the end of the strip.  Round one done!

Keep the puffs about the same height as you go around the wreath.

Once the first round is completed, repeat the process with the second blue deco mesh piece.  Choose a different starting point on the wire frame and do the same process for the second blue deco mesh piece.

Round two done! This is what mine looked like after adding the two blue strips. Patriotic Mesh Wreath More Blue Mesh

Grab the white deco mesh, unwrap, unroll, and cut it in half.  Then attach the two white mesh strips using the same method as above except start at a different pipe cleaner.

Four rounds done! This is the wreath after two rows of blue and two rows of white deco mesh are added.Patriotic Mesh Wreath More white mesh

Repeat with red decorative mesh.

All six rounds done! This is the finished wreath base after six rounds of deco mesh. Patriotic Mesh Wreath Red Mesh

After completing this process, I realized that the blue mesh wasn't very visible. The next time I make this wreath (probably for another holiday or occasion) I will add the mesh strips differently alternating between the three colors.

STEP 4: Pipe Cleaner to back

Now the wreath base is finished but you still have crazy pipe cleaners sticking every which way.  It’s time to tuck the ends of the pipe cleaners to the back side of the wire wreath.  Then twist the ends securely together around the wire frame. Patriotic Mesh Wreath Twist on Bow

You can leave the pipe cleaners on the back with long tails or you can cut the pipe cleaner tails shorter so they stay hidden. Patriotic Mesh Wreath Trimmed pipecleaner

STEP 5: add the patriotic bow

To attach the bow, place a pipe cleaner through the loop on the back of the bow. Patriotic Mesh Wreath Bow Attached

Slip the ends of the pipe cleaners through the wreath frame to the back.  Twist to secure to the back of the frame.

STEP 6: attach the stars

Dollar Tree had red, white and blue foam stars which are the perfect embellishment for the wreath.

Arrange stars BEFORE gluing them down. Once you're happy with the way the stars look, go around the wreath and hot glue them into place.

Using a hot glue gun is the easiest and faster way to attach the stars. However, you can use other types of glue also.Patriotic Mesh Wreath Place Stars

Final Result

When your DIY Patriotic Deco Mesh Wreath is finished, this is what it will look like! It’s strong and durable enough for outside use, or it's pretty enough to display indoors as well!
