Resin epoxy crafts are a popular and versatile category of DIY and art projects that use synthetic resin. This page will tell you a little bit about making resin epoxy crafts and give you fun and exciting resin arts and crafts projects to explore.
What is Resin?
Resin is a liquid compound that, when mixed with a hardener or catalyst, undergoes a chemical reaction and cures into a solid form.
Types of Resin
Before heading to the store to purchase resin for a project, decide what kinds of projects will be made. Artwork? Jewelry? Working with molds? Surprisingly, not all resin is alike!
Choosing the right resin for crafts is important to get the best results.
- Epoxy Resin- This is the most popular resin for arts and crafts. This resin allows a long working time of 20 to 60 minutes. It cures to a clear and glossy finish and is good for jewelry, coasters, and art. There are several brands of epoxy resin, so read the labels carefully to be sure this is the type of epoxy resin needed.
- UV Resin - This cures quickly under a UV light and is ideal for small, quick projects. However, it is more limited in depth and volume than epoxy.
- Polyester Resin - This resin is strong and inexpensive, but very smelly and more toxic. It is used more often in industrial or mold-based applications.
Using resin for crafts
There are many projects using resin that can be found on this page. Some popular categories of resin arts and crafts are below:
- Jewelry: pendants, earrings, rings that can include flowers, glitter, charms, etc. (Check out our page of paper bead and jewelry for another medium to make jewelry.)
- Coasters & Trays: functional home decor, often with embedded designs
- Keychains: quick, customizable gifts or personal items
- Art Panels: ocean waves, abstract pours, geode art, and layered scenes
- Molded Objects: dice, figurines, ornaments, and paperweights
