SPOOL KNITTING PROJECTS & IDEAS

Spool knitting is an activity that is especially fun for kids; it's a great way to teach them the basic principles of knitting. Spool knitting is easy to do, and many parents have found that their kiddos enjoy it because it is calming and provides them success at creating a knitting project.

To learn the basics of how to spool knit, look at our spool knitting topic page.

We have a long list of spool knitting projects for you to browse through and find the best project to create with the knitted tube that is made with your spool or French knitter.

Spool knitting is also known as corking, French knitting, and tomboy knitting, and the devices used to do this craft are called knitting spools, knitting Nancys, peg knitters, knitting knobbies, knitting mushrooms and  French knitters.

The knitting spool is the oldest of the knitting loom tools.  Their history dates back nearly 400 years!  To learn about more loom tools, check out our page on weaving.

In the past, spool knitting was used to make horse reins!!  I can only imagine what that would be like!

Besides horse reins, what other spool or French knitting projects could you make? Let’s look at some of the ideas!

Jewelry Spool Knitting Projects

You can make a bow with the spool knitting cord, which can then be made into necklaces, pins or hair barrettes

Be sure to check out our Braided Bracelet, too! It can be made in school colors or to match an outfit. You could even use holiday colors to make a perfect accessory for any of the holidays!

The Breast Cancer Awareness Pin is a great project to make with pink colored spool cord. You could also use the ribbon to create other projects like magnets or bookmarks.

You’ll find many other jewelry designs below!

Holiday Spool Knitting Projects

You may be surprised by the French knitter projects that we found for the holidays!  It’s really amazing what is possible with the spool or French knitter.

The cords you make can be crafted into various holiday spool knitting projects. Please take a look at the tutorial we have on how to make an adorable Candy Cane Ornament for your Christmas tree!

Make a few to give as holiday gifts; they are so cute and so easy to make!

You can use the DIY Christmas Tree Garland to coordinate with your farmhouse home decor. It will give your tree a homespun feel, and you can use a variety of colors to make it your own.

The Knit Christmas Trees are so simple to make using your spool knitted cord in any color you like.  A sparkly gold yarn would be a show stopper!

A wire is threaded through the cord after it’s been shaped into a cone.  So simple and so pretty!

Christmas is not the only holiday for which we have spool knitted patterns.  Look below for more seasonal ideas!

Kitchen Spool Knitting Projects

We have several great ideas for French (spool) knitting projects for your kitchen.

Check out the pot holder French knitting projects.  You’ll find a very pretty Daisy Potholder tutorial to create a hot pad for the table or a potholder to use with the oven and stove.

The spool knit pattern for the Rabbit Hot Pad is just adorable for your table in springtime!  Actually, I think you’ll find it so cute that you may want to use it year round!

Need something special for yourself or as a gift?  The Mug Cozy project calls for i-cord, but it can be made with a spool knitted cord just as easily.

Coasters are constantly disappearing in my house!  If this happens to you, or you want a quick gift, take a look at the coaster ideas below. The Peppermint Coaster is a perfect gift for the holiday season!

Keep browsing this page for more kitchen spool knitting projects.  You’ll find some for celebrating other holidays as well!

Children’s Toys Made With Spool Knitting

The neat thing about French or Spool knitting is that your kiddos can make the cord with their spool knitter, and then make a toy for themselves from it!  Talk about keeping them busy!

A couple of the toy spool knitting projects below are the Jump Rope and the Rug for American Dolls.  The kids are always looking for something to add to their American Doll collection, but the store prices are out of this world!  It’s time to have them make something for their doll!

Don’t miss the sweet Felted Teddy Bear made from spool knitting!  It’s another great kids’ toy and would make a nice little gift for someone special!

There are more toys below, along with many other spool knitting projects that you could make, like the infinity scarf, rug, shoe laces, and more.

It’s time to get out the spool knitter/French knitter and get to work making some cords!  The spool knitting patterns you’ll find on this page will use up that cord quickly!

The kiddos will love this!
