WHAT YOU NEED to make the crochet heart ornament
About the Crochet Heart Ornament
This crochet heart ornament uses a 3" plastic heart-shaped ring for support. The pattern is written for a 3" heart ring and Lily Sugar and Cream Cotton yarn.
A different sized ring or yarn can be used for this project but it may alter the number of stitches needed to make the heart in the center of the ring.
The step-by-step photo instructions below will demonstrate how to make the crochet heart pattern.
If you prefer a standard written crochet pattern, click the link or scroll after the step-by-step instructions and my signature. The concise pattern without photos is included there.

Free CROCHET HEART PATTERN AND STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS
I am left-handed, so the photos below show left-handed crochet. If you are right-handed, you will work in the opposite direction.
This pattern uses only standard crochet stitches: chain, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet and triple crochet. So, even though I’m working it backward for right-handed crocheters, I believe you can follow along as it uses standard stitches.
Experience Level: Confident Beginner
Size Hook: H or 3.5mm
Yarn: Lily Sugar n' Cream Cotton yarn
Supplies: 3" Plastic Heart Rings
Finished Size: Approx 4" wide by 3 3/4" high
Abbreviations (US Terms)
Round 1: Make a Magic Ring and Single Crochet into the Ring
Make a magic ring and then stitch 10 single crochets (sc) into the ring. Join the round with a slip stitch (sl st) in the top of the first single crochet. (10 stitches)
Round 2: Crochet Heart Shape
Round 2 will make the heart shape. The stitches in the rounds of the heart start from the point at the bottom of the heart.
The stitches in this round will be made in the tops of the single crochets from round 1. For the remainder of this round, I will refer to the tops of the single crochet as the "next stitch."
1 Double Crochet (dc) into the top of the first single crochet in the round. This will be the same stitch you slip-stitched in to join round 1.
Continue the round with 2 single crochets (sc) in next stitch; 1 double crochet (dc) and 1 triple crochet (tr) in the next stitch; 2 triple crochets (tr) in the next stitch; 1 double crochet (dc) in the next stitch and 1 single crochet (sc) in the next stitch. This last single crochet is the top center of the heart. Half of the heart is complete.
Finish the round by stitching the second half. Stitch 1 double crochet (dc) in the next stitch; 2 triple crochets (tr) in the next stitch, 1 triple crochet (tr) and 1 double crochet (dc) in the next stitch; 2 single crochet (sc) in the next stitch.
Finish the round by slip stitching (sl st) into the top of the first stitch in the round.
Round 2 is complete and the heart is taking shape. (16 stitches)
Round 3: Join Heart Ring
This round will join the plastic ring. Hold the heart plastic ring with the bottom point facing up behind the crochet piece. Have the working yarn going behind the ring.
Make each single crochet (sc) through the top of the stitch in the previous round and pick up the yarn wrapped behind the heart ring by putting your hook in the center of the ring and picking up the yarn.
Pull the yarn through the stitch and then complete the single crochet as usual. If you need a visual demonstration, click the link above to our YouTube video tutorial.
Make 2 single crochets (sc) in top of each of the next 8 stitches, looping in the plastic heart ring as you stitch. The first two single crochets (sc) will be next to the point of the heart. The last stitch of this set will be at the top point of the heart. Adjust the stitches so they are around the first half of the heart.
Continue with the second half of the heart. Stitch 2 single crochet (sc) in the next 8 stitches, continuing to loop in the plastic heart. Adjust these stitches to fill the last half of the heart.
Slip stitch (sl st) to the top of the first single crochet (sc) in the round to join. (32 st)
Round 4: Chain Loops
Stitch 6 chains (ch), pull up the loop and remove the hook from the color 1.
Wrap the six chains to the back of the ring and out of the way.
Join color 2 with a slip stitch (sl st) at the top of the next single crochet (sc). Stitch 6 chains (ch), pull up the loop and remove the hook from the color 2.
Create the loops around the heart. Place the loop of color 1 back on the crochet hook and tighten the loop.
Repeat Chains: [ Fold the chain with Color 2 down so it wraps towards the back of the ring and is out of the way.
Loop the color 1 chain over the color 2 chain and slip stitch (sl st) at the top of the next single crochet (sc).
Stitch 6 chains (ch), pull up the loop and remove the hook from the color 1.
Place the loop of color 2 back on the crochet hook and tighten the loop.
Fold the chain with color 1 down so it wraps towards the back of the ring and is out of the way.
Loop the color 2 chains over the color 1 chain and slip stitch (sl st) at the top of the next single crochet (sc). Stitch 6 chains (ch), pull up the loop, and remove the hook from color 2. ] End Repeat Chains
Repeat Chains from [ to ] 5 times around the first half of the heart. (count 12 chain loops and two unfinished)
Center Top of Heart
To leave a small gap between the loops, we will skip one stitch by slip stitching twice for each color.
Pick up color 1 with the hook and tighten the loop.
Fold the chain with color 2 down so it wraps towards the back of the ring and is out of the way.
Loop the color 1 chain over the color 2 chain and slip stitch (sl st) in the top of the next single crochet (sc).
Slip stitch (sl st) in the next single crochet (sc). (this leaves a small gap in the loops at the top of the heart)
Chain 6 (ch), pull up the yarn and remove the hook.
Pick up color 2 with the hook and tighten the loop.
Loop color 2 chain over the color 1 chain and slip stitch (sl st) in the slip stitch from color 1. Slip stitch (sl st) in the next single crochet (sc) with the working yarn behind the color 1 chain.
Chain 6 (ch), pull up the yarn and remove the hook.
The two sl st created above will leave a small gap in the top of the heart for the point.
Repeat Chains 7 times from [ to ] to finish the remainder of the heart. (count 14 ch loops and two unfinished)
Finish the last two loops
It's time to finish off the last loops of each color. Place the loop of color 1 back on the crochet hook and tighten the loop.
Slip stitch (sl st) into the base of the first color 1 chain in the circle. This will finish the color 1 loops. Fasten off color 1, leaving about a 2-3" tail. Yarn over, pull the tail through the loop, and tighten it.
Place the loop of color 2 back on the crochet hook and tighten the loop.
Slip stitch (sl st) into the base of the first color 2 chain in the circle. This will finish the color 2 loops. Fasten off color 2, leaving about a 2-3” tail.
Round 4 is complete! (30 chain loops)
Weave in yarn tails
Bring all thread tails to the back of the ornament. Tie off the beginning thread for color 2 with the ending thread for color 2 to secure.
Pull tight and tie off the thread tail for the magic ring to secure.
Thread each of the yarn tails onto a tapestry needle and weave them under the stitches around the ring in the back of the ornament. Trim yarn tails.
Make Hanging Loop
Cut a 10" piece of yarn. Thread the yarn onto a yarn or tapestry needle and weave behind the threads at the top of the heart. Remove the needle and tie the two ends together in a knot.
The photo below shows the back of the ornaments.
