How to make a Doll Headband for an 18" Doll

Eighteen inch dolls are so popular, and kids love to have lots of clothes and doll accessories to creatively dress them up.

The clothes, 18" doll accessories and all of the other various and sundry items for these dolls get very costly!

There are so many things that can be made at home with craft supplies that will dramatically cut costs. 

Why does my 14 year old still play with dolls?

It is normal if a child still wants to play with toys as they transition into adolescence.  As a matter of fact, this kind of play should be celebrated with so much influence and focus on social media.

As long as a child's play is not affecting or replacing real world friendships, parents have no need to be concerned.

WHAT YOU NEED to make a Reversible DIY doll headband

• Two 2" x 12" strips of fabric in different colors or patterns
• Elastic pony tail holder
• Threaded sewing machine
• Iron and ironing board
• Scissors

INSTRUCTIONS for how to make a doll headband

STEP 1: Press the ends of the fabric

Using a pressing tool or hand, finger press the short ends of both fabrics 1/4 of an inch towards the wrong side of the fabric. This will insure that there are no raw edges at the ends of the fabrics.

step 2: sew the two strips of fabric together

Place the fabric strips together with right sides of the fabrics facing each other. Use the sewing machine to sew a seam along the long edges of the fabrics.

Begin sewing at one end using a 1/4" seam allowance. Sew along the long edge of the fabric, being sure to back tack before continuing to sew.  Sew the fabrics together along the edge, back tacking again at the end to keep the stitching firmly in place.

Do the same on the other long side of the fabrics.  Start sewing at the top edge, being sure to back tack at the beginning and end of the 1/4" seam.

step 3:  turn the Doll Headband fabric right side out

Now that the two pieces of fabric are sewn together, it is time to turn the DIY doll headband so the right sides of the fabric show.

Begin at one end and start pushing the fabric into the tube that was made.  It may be necessary to use a turning tool, pencil or a chop stick to turn the entire length.

step 4:  Iron the reversible 18" doll headband

Take the turned fabric for the doll headband to the ironing board.  Using the iron, press the fabric flat. Press one side, then turn the fabric over to press the other side, making crisp edges on the side seams.

step 5: attach the pony tail holder to the 18 doll headband

Finally, sew the pony tail holder to each of the short ends of the pressed fabric. Start at one end. Fold the short end of the fabric over the pony tail holder and sew it in place.

The pony tail holder should be enclosed within the sewn fold.

Turn the doll headband around and attach the pony tail holder to the other short end of the 18" doll headband, fold the short end over the pony tail holder so it is inside of the fold. Make sure that the headband forms a circle without any twists.

Sew in place.  Clip any threads left from sewing.

step 6: Place the headband on the 18" doll

Choose the side of the doll headband that will be showing. Turn the headband so that fabric is on the top.  Pull the 18" doll's hair completely through the headband with the ponytail holder at the back of the doll's neck.

The doll headband is complete.  It will look sweet as the newest 18" doll! accessory.
