WHAT YOU NEED to make a 3" yarn tassel

Yarn Tassel 1 Supplies

INSTRUCTIONS to make a 3" yarn tassel

STEP 1: Cut the correct size cardboard

For this tutorial, a 3" tassel will be made, so the cardboard pieces are cut to a height of 3" and a width of 4". If you'd like a different size tassel, adjust the height of the cardboard accordingly. The width can remain 4" wide.

Cut two pieces of cardboard with the craft scissors to the size of the tassel. For example, a 4" tassel will need cardboard that is 4" high and 4" wide.Yarn Tassel 2 Cut CardboardFor a smaller bookmark tassel, you can visit our tutorial on Bee Sayings Bookmarks. It includes a step-by-step tutorial on making a small tassel with your fingers.

Step 2: Cut two yarn pieces to the necessary lengths

Using the scissors, cut one piece of yarn about 24" long.  Fold the yarn in half with the ends together and thread both ends onto the tapestry needle. This can be tricky, so see our tip on threading an embroidery needle.Yarn Tassel 3 Cut Yarn Tie

Now, cut another piece of yarn 12" long with the scissors. Place this between the two pieces of cardboard near the top edge.Yarn Tassel 4 Tie under cardboard

Step 3: Wrap the yarn around the cardboard

Hold the two pieces of cardboard with the yarn sandwiched between them. Lay the yarn with the end at the bottom of the cardboard and start wrapping the yarn around the cardboard. Keep wrapping until you have wrapped about 20 times. If a fuller tassel is desired, simply wrap more yarn onto the cardboard.Yarn Tassel 5 Wrap Yarn

Step four: Remove the yarn from the cardboard

Begin this step by using the scissors to cut the tassel from the skein.Yarn Tassel 6 Yarn WrappedTake the yarn that is between the two pieces of cardboard and pull it up to the top of the tassel with the ends even. Tie the yarn in a square knot at the top of the tassel. Tie a second square knot to be sure it is secure.

Remove the loops from the cardboard and set it aside.Yarn Tassel 7 Tassel off cardboard

Step 5: Make the top of the tassel

To create the top of the tassel, use the pencil as a guide to wrap the tassel, forming a rounded top.  Insert the pencil through the loops on the tassel and move it to the top by the knot. Yarn Tassel 8 Place Pencil

Using the yarn on the tapestry needle, thread it underneath and through the loop.Yarn Tassel 10 Loop YarnPull it tightly, then wrap the yarn around several times.

Next, anchor this yarn by running the tapestry needle through the wrapping and cut the yarn. This will make it secure.Yarn Tassel 13 Tie offRemove the pencil.

Step 6: Trim the bottom of the tassel

Using the scissors, cut through the loops at the bottom of the tassel. If the ends are uneven, trim them to make them even across the bottom.Yarn Tassel 15 trim

The tassel is complete!Yarn Tassel 16 Finished Tassel 2I hope you enjoyed tassel making with yarn. Use it as an embellishment on anything you can dream of!

Happy Crafting and have a great day!
