Woodworking Calculators

Woodworking gives you the opportunity to build unique and custom projects.  We often hear from our readers that the real problem they face when purchasing wood is knowing how much and what type of wood to use in their projects.

Our woodworking readers asked us for a resource that would help them with that task.

You Asked For It And Here It Is....Plus More

We have some wonderful calculators to help you choose the amount of wood to purchase for a project while helping you save money by purchasing just what you need.

We took this one step further by providing links to woodworking calculators that do more than help you limit wood waste.

One of our calculators will help you determine how much of a specific type of wood is needed for your project.  Calculating for a soft wood such as birch will give you a different amount than calculating for a harder wood, such as oak or walnut.

We also have a link below to a compound cuts calculator.  This is very helpful when your project has multiple sides and angles to it.

Our link to a calculator aptly named “The Sagulator” will help you when designing shelves.  This calculator takes into account shelf sag depending on which type of material you will be using.Snip of Sagulator Calculator

The calculator also allows you to add in both the shelf load and shelf distribution, as well as the method you will be using to attach the shelf.  It is even possible to add an edging strip into the calculations to stiffen the shelf further due to the heavy shelf load.

We also have a useful link to a calculator known as “The Shrinkulator”.  This helps to estimate the changes in wood dimensions, either shrinkage or expansion, based on changes in the wood’s water content.Shrinkulator snip

Use the “Wood Picker”  calculator to identify the best woods to use in your project.

You simply enter your criteria for weight, hardness, stiffness, strength, shock and decay resistance, stability and ease of working and a list of woods will appear ranked from the highest to lowest matches.

You Can't Beat That!

So go ahead and take a look at the links below….you woodworkers will find them very useful!
