Crochet coasters are fun projects that can add a handmade touch to home decor. They are also great for using up leftover yarn and practicing new stitches.
For the experienced crocheter, creating their own coaster pattern may be a nice challenge. However, with the many free crochet coaster patterns below, there is no lack of inspiration!

Materials Needed for Crochet Coasters
- Yarn: Cotton yarn is preferred because it is durable and absorbent. However, you can use any yarn you have on hand.
- Crochet Hook: Be sure to use a hook size appropriate for the yarn being used. A size H/8 or G/6 hook is often used for cotton yarn.
- Scissors: These will be used to cut the yarn.
- Tapestry Needle: Use this to weave in the ends of the yarn.
The free crochet coasters below include traditional squares and simple circles, along with a nice selection of fun coasters in various shapes and designs, such as cats, chickens, sunbursts, and donuts. Many of these coasters are easy to make.
Scroll down to see the crochet coasters made for special holidays, like the two Christmas tree crochet patterns, the snowman face pattern, the Valentine hearts simple pattern, shamrocks, and Thanksgiving turkeys!
My two favorites are the turkey coasters for Thanksgiving and the beautiful crochet coaster pattern of sunbursts to brighten the home. The citrus coasters are so fun, too!
Tips for Success
There are several things to remember when crocheting coasters that will make the finished project look professional.
As mentioned before, yarn choice is essential. Cotton yarn is best for coasters because it absorbs moisture, is machine washable, and is very durable.
The crocheter will want to block the finished coasters to ensure they lie flat. The easiest way is to dampen the coasters with water and pin them to a flat surface to dry.
Without blocking, the coasters curl up and won’t lie flat to do their job.
Gauge is not critical for coasters, which makes them great for beginners. Do try to keep the stitches even for a neat appearance.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with different shapes, sizes, and stitch patterns. The plethora of crochet patterns below make this easy.
