A Crochet Snowflake Memory
I hang a very special lacy crochet snowflake on my Christmas tree every year; my mom made it when I was very young, yet I was old enough to remember the scads of crochet snowflakes everywhere!
Mom was a big crafter. She didn’t know how to knit, but she could crochet just about anything.
So one year she found a free crochet snowflake pattern and taught herself how to crochet snowflakes. She must have loved it, because, like I said, we had a blizzard in the house!
She attached the crochet snowflakes onto every gift she gave to friends and family that year. At the time, I had no idea what lovely memories one of those pretty, white crochet snowflakes would hold.
My mom’s health has declined as she has aged, and she no longer crochets or does crafts.
Like most people, when they feel themselves declining, they start to give special things to special people. A few years ago I received a package of old ornaments from my childhood Christmas tree.
One of the ornaments was the crochet snowflake she had made. Every year, when I put it on the tree, my mind flashes to decades ago. I can see my young mom, excited as I am when I’m caught up in a fun craft.
I can see her nimble fingers as she looped the yarn around the crochet hook, making it look effortless. To her, it probably was effortless.
My mind then jumps to the vision of her crocheting the many afghans and blankets she loved to make. That was definitely effortless to her!
She used the same pattern every time, but with the different yarn colors and textures, no two looked alike.
Everyone had their own afghan on their bed, there were afghans in the living room to curl up in, and every new baby, friend or family, received a soft and sweet baby blanket.
My children each have a pure white one made especially for their christenings. Such a special keepsake.

But I digress…
