I have always liked the look of many pillows on beds, sofas, couches, and chairs to soften things up and make a room feel cozy. Using crochet pillows or crochet pillow covers may seem like such a small thing, but they make my house feel homey.
The problem had been that I could never find the “just right” pillows to create the image I had in my mind.
Here is where crochet pillows come in! When I realized I could make my own pillows using crochet free pillow patterns to add the textures and colors that felt right to me, things began to change in my house!
We have collected a very diverse list of crochet pillow and cover patterns for you here!
As you browse through the links to the crochet free pillow patterns, I’d like to give you some things to think about that really helped me when deciding on what pillows to add to my home decor.
Choosing Your Crochet Pillow Yarn Colors
As with fabrics for my quilts, choosing yarn colors has been difficult for me. I know it comes easily to many, and a lot of crafters find it one of the most fun and exciting parts of the craft.
If you struggle a bit like I do, I have a hint for you, especially when it comes to adding crochet pillows.
First, take a look at the big picture, including furniture, wall colors, and flooring in the room you are working with. Squint your eyes, and see what color “pops” out at you. You are going to want to choose your crochet pillow yarn colors to highlight the color that is popping!
Be careful not to choose a color that is the new “pop”! Definitely go for a different color than the “pop”, but be sure it doesn’t jump out. You want to accent the main color and not overshadow it.
Our crochet pillow patterns show the pillows in solids and multi-colors. Many of the free patterns are solids with great texture! Adding texture like fringe, tassels, bubble stitches, etc. will add so much to the room, just by adding a crochet pillow in a solid.
Variety in Crochet Pillow Choices
The particular crochet pillow patterns that you choose will depend on the environment you want to achieve.
If you are looking for something warm and fun, add a wide variety of pillows. It’s best not to make any of them exact matches if warm and fun is the goal.
Definitely stick to the color guidelines and make the pillows the accent, but in my living room, I had two matching couches with four matching throw pillows. Talk about a stuffy look!
Another nice look is to make a crochet pillow for each chair along with the couch pillows. Make sure every sitting area has a pillow; it doesn’t have to be large, but the pillows keep the look fun and warm.
If you are going to be crocheting pillows for a bedroom, you once again want to decide the look you are going for. The bedroom should be personal and relaxing. And that means different things for different people!
For some, bright colors are just over the top and not at all restful. In this room, you may want to stick to neutrals or even the same color for every pillow, changing it up with texture and shape.
Arranging Your Crochet Pillows
Although I don’t always follow this rule, it is often suggested that you have an odd number of pillows. At first, I thought this would alter my world of symmetry.
In my bedroom, I like to go for symmetry. Well, I pretty much like symmetry everywhere. But I digress.
I have five pillows in my bedroom now and am still able to keep the symmetry I crave. I placed the neutral and solid sleeping pillows side by side in twos, and then I added a smaller and colorful crochet pillow in a different shape in the middle of the stack.
I love this look!
If you like a more effortless and asymmetrical look, just go wild and random with size, shape and even color.
If you have more neutral sleeping pillows, keep them at the back by the headboard and toss the colorful and fun pillows on top and to the front. Don’t be afraid to go with some of our more exciting print crochet pillow patterns!
