What is Tunisian crochet?

Tunisian crochet is a combination of both crochet and knitting.  A crochet hook is used to make the Tunisian crochet stitches, but all of the stitches are held on the crochet hook, just like knitting.

Long crochet hooks are necessary to hold the long line of stitches.  It is also possible to add a cable attachment to the crochet hook for this purpose. Check out our page devoted to Tunisian crochet hooks and other supplies!Tunisian Crochet Hooks with Cord

What is Tunisian crochet best used for?

The Tunisian crochet stitch is often referred to as the afghan stitch. In Tunisian crochet, each row is worked twice with different stitches, which makes the finished fabric very thick.

This thick fabric is wonderful for afghans (named after this stitch) as well as other blankets and even washcloths.  It is also possible to make warm, thick clothing using the Tunisian crochet stitches.

Here are just a few of the Tunisian crochet patterns that can be found below:

  • Pillows: The Tunisian crochet stitches make for a very classy pillow to brighten any room.  The Basketweave Pillow from the Hook Nook is both elegant and appealing with the lovely Tunisian crochet texture.
  • Blankets: The Tunisian stitch is also known as the afghan stitch.  Make a thick warm afghan like the Medallion Afghan from Craft Yarn Council.
  • Clothing: Take a look below at the warm Tunisian Ribbed Hat by Bernat found at Yarnspirations. “Warm” is the keyword for Tunisian crochet patterns.

The Cobbled Street Cowl from A Crochet Journey is a lovely cowl that will keep its wearer warm and fashionable.
  • Household Items: There are several patterns for Tunisian crocheted dishcloths and scrubby patterns to be found here. Take a look at the Tunisian Rectangle Scrubby from Joann. Scrubby Smoothie yarn is combined with cotton yarn to make a perfect scrubby for the kitchen!

The Sampler Tunisian Dishcloth pattern from Petals to Picots is great for a beginner. This sampler will give you the chance to practice some basic Tunisian stitches.

This is just a quick peek into the Tunisian crochet projects found below. Tunisian Crochet books can be found on our site as well.
