how do you clean a plastic canvas mug rug or coaster?
If your plastic canvas project has a glued backing and gets dirty, follow these steps for a little spot cleaning:
- Gently dab the stained area with a soft, damp towel or cloth. DO NOT RUB, as this can cause the yarn to frizz.
- For stubborn stains, use a mild soap solution and carefully blot the affected area.
- Allow the project to air dry completely before using it again.
- Do not wash your project in a machine or dry it in the dryer. Avoid dry cleaning and harsh cleaning solutions, as these can melt or warp the plastic.
- If your project gets dusty, use a vacuum to remove the dust.

WHAT YOU NEED:
INSTRUCTIONS for finishing plastic canvas project with felt
STEP 1: Prepare the felt
Measure the back of the completed plastic canvas piece. Then cut a piece of felt to match that measurement.
STEP 2: apply glue
Apply a thin layer of fabric glue to the back of the coaster or mug rug. Make sure to apply around the perimeter and also some in the center. Alternatively, you can apply the glue directly to the felt piece.
**TIP** You could use hot glue instead of fabric glue.
STEP 3: attach the felt
Press the felt backing onto the glued surface of the plastic canvas piece aligning the outer edges. Smooth out any wrinkles while pressing firmly to ensure the felt adheres properly.
**Tip:** After firmly pressing the felt down, I like placing a couple of books on top to help it adhere well and prevent any wrinkles while it dries.
STEP 4: FINAL step
Allow the glue to dry completely. Check the edges to ensure the felt is securely attached. If any areas have lifted, add a small dab of glue and press down firmly.
Once completely dry, your mug rug or coaster is ready to use.
Plastic canvas coasters and mug rugs are attractive additions to a living room, dining room or any room in the house.
**Optional Method:**
Another option is to add cork to the back of the piece. Please refer to our tutorial for detailed instructions on how to add cork to the back of a plastic canvas project.
