Plastic canvas coasters are a fun and creative way to add a handmade touch to your home or to gift to friends and family.
While the front of the coaster showcases your beautiful needlework design, don't overlook the importance of finishing the back neatly.
One of my favorite methods for finishing the back of a plastic canvas coaster or mug rug is to use cork material. This cork material not only gives the coaster/mug rug a professional finish but also adds durability and creates a non-slip surface.
With this step-by-step guide, you'll learn how to finish the back of the plastic canvas project with a thin cord. Plus, don’t miss out on the accompanying video tutorial!

SUPPLIES NEEDED:
STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR FINISHING THE BACK OF A COASTER
STEP 1: Measure and Cut the Cork Material
Begin by measuring the backside of your finished plastic canvas coaster. Make sure to note the dimensions carefully.
Next, take the roll of cork material (I used Darice Cork) and lay the roll flat on a stable work surface. Using a ruler, along with a pen or marker, measure and mark a piece of cork slightly smaller than the dimensions of the coaster. This will allow for easy application without any overhang.
Once the cork is measured and marked, take your scissors and carefully cut along the marked line.
After you have the cork piece cut, check it against the back of the coaster to confirm that it fits properly before proceeding to the next step.
STEP 2: Apply Glue to the Coaster
Grab your hot glue gun and apply a thin layer of glue to the back of the coaster.
Be sure to apply glue around the perimeter as well as some in the center.
STEP 3: Attach the cork to the Coaster
Carefully align the cork cutout piece and position it carefully on the back of your plastic canvas coaster.
Take your time to ensure the edges of the cork line up as neatly as possible with the back of the coaster.
Once you are satisfied with the alignment, press the cork firmly against the back of the coaster. Apply even pressure across the surface to ensure that it adheres securely.
**TIP** With the cork side facing up, place several heavy books on top of the coaster. This weight will help keep the cork flat and prevent any buckling, allowing for a smooth and even bond as the adhesive sets.
STEP 4: FINAL STEP
Allow the glue to dry completely.
Once dry, check the edges to ensure the cork is securely attached. If any area is not secure, add a small dab of hot glue and press down firmly. Again, place books on top until glue dries.
By taking the time to finish the back of your plastic canvas coaster with cork, you'll enhance both its functionality and appearance. The cord backing serves as a protective layer that prevents scratches and marks on your furniture, making it suitable for everyday use or as a thoughtful gift for friends and family.
**OPTIONAL METHOD**
Another option for finishing the back of a plastic canvas coaster or mug rug is to use felt.
If you would like to use felt to finish the back, please refer to our tutorial for detailed instructions on how to finish plastic canvas mug rug or coasters with a felt back.
This small detail of finishing the back of a plastic canvas project makes a big difference in the overall quality and durability of your handmade project.
