Christmas Basket Ornament with Plastic Canvas

Plastic canvas can be used to make so many things, and this 3D basket Christmas ornament is the cutest!

I love to make Christmas ornaments every December to send to my sisters' families and to my parents.  As a child, I received a new ornament each year and left home with enough to decorate my first tree.

Those ornaments mean so much to me and hold so many dear memories.  I love the tradition of giving out handmade ornaments each year to the very special people in my family.

I see them once a year as we live in different states.  Hopefully, they think of Christmases with me when they put the ornaments I made on their trees!Christmas Basket Ornament from Plastic Canvas - fb

My latest plastic canvas project has been this teddy bear plastic canvas Christmas ornament.  It's so adorable with the Christmas teddy bear, but it could hold any treasure!

Let's learn a little about plastic canvas!!!

What size does plastic canvas come in?

Plastic canvas, also known as vinyl weave, is available in many different colors, shapes, and sizes.  It is often sold in sheets which can be cut into any size or shape that you prefer or that is called for in a pattern.

Numbers and letters, along with various shapes such as circles and triangles, are popular precut shapes available for purchase as well.

Plastic canvas, just like any other textile weave, is described in count. For example, 7 count plastic canvas has seven holes per linear inch.  Most common sizes are 5, 7, 10, and 14 count; these various hole counts are made for different yarn weights.

For this project, 7 count plastic mesh is used.

INSTRUCTIONS for making a plastic canvas christmas basket ornament

step 1: print the ornament directions

There is a link to the PDF of the chart with the directions and pattern for the plastic canvas Christmas ornament below.  Print out the chart before beginning this project and become familiar with the colors and pattern for this project.

STEP 2: Cut the plastic canvas

Plastic mesh is very easy to use. This project used 7 count plastic canvas mesh.  Using scissors, cut out a piece of the plastic mesh to measure 28 X 6 holes. Set aside the rest of the plastic canvas to save for another project.

STEP 3: Needlepoint the Christmas design on the plastic canvas

Using the PDF chart, start with the green yarn for the holly in the center of the plastic canvas.  Fill in the green spaces from the chart on the plastic canvas using the continental stitch.Christmas Basket Ornament Plastic Canvas 2 Pattern

Check out our Plastic Canvas page for tutorials on plastic canvas stitches.

To make threading the yarn through the needle easier, watch our Youtube video on a quick tip showing how to thread a needle

Next, follow the pattern to add the white portion of the basket.

Using red yarn, finish the design for the holly by sewing two french knots on the plastic canvas Christmas ornament. Christmas Basket Ornament Plastic Canvas Pattern Stitched

step 4: Fold the plastic canvas into a basket shape

Taking one end of the plastic canvas in each hand, fold the right side around to the left side, crossing over the top of the left end and stopping where the plastic canvas is not stitched.

The holes in the two ends of the plastic canvas should line up, with a point at the top.

step 5: sew the ends of the plastic canvas together and fill in the blank space

Using red yarn, sew the two ends together.  The continental stitch is used for this purpose. Christmas Basket Ornament Plastic Canvas 5 Stitch Basket

Continue using the continental stitch to completely fill in the rest of the plastic canvas that is not already sewn on the Christmas ornament.Christmas Basket Ornament Plastic Canvas 6 Continental Stitch

step 6: stitch around the top and bottom of the basket

Use the overcast stitch with the red yarn to stitch all the way around the top portion of the basket.  This will cover all of the exposed areas on the edges. Christmas Basket Ornament Plastic Canvas 7 Overcast Stitch

At the top of the point, be sure to sew two or three stitches through the same hole so the plastic is covered completely.Christmas Basket Ornament Plastic Canvas 8 Stitch Corner

Next, using the red yarn, do the same overcast stitching around the bottom of the basket.

step 7: attach the hanger

Finally, use a decorative cord at the topmost point in the triangle to attach a piece to hang the ornament from the Christmas tree.  The cord will go through the top center hole.Christmas Basket Ornament Plastic Canvas 9 Add Hanger

The plastic canvas basket is ready to be made into a teddy bear plastic canvas Christmas ornament!  Simply add a cute flocked teddy bear to sit nicely inside.  Christmas Basket Ornament Plastic Canvas Finished

Another option is to add candy to the basket instead of the bear to hang on the tree.Christmas Basket Ornament Plastic Canvas 11 Add Candy

Either way, these make lovely little gifts for teachers, friends, coworkers, and even yourself!
