Loopy Bath Rug Tutorial (Loop Yarn)

This wonderful fluffy loopy bath rug is made from the new Loop Yarn and our own loopy stitch.  This super-soft bath mat will be your favorite to stand on.  Make one yourself with the loop yarn and our loopy stitch.

If you have not seen the loop yarn before, this is a new type of yarn which appeared in stores recently. The yarn features unique preformed loops so no knitting needles are required. All you need are your hands.

There are a least four different brands of loop yarn - Bernat Alize Blanket EZ yarn, Big Twist Loopity Loop Yarn, Red Hearts Loop-It Yarn and Lion Brand Off The Hook Yarn. Links to purchase yarn are at the end of this article.

INSTRUCTIONS

Our finished bath rug measures 18" x 28".   

This rug can easily be made into a larger bath rug.  Add more foundation chains in step two to make a wider rug.  To make a longer rug, add more rows.

A larger bath rug will need more skeins of yarn.  Since we put two loops of the loops yarn in each base yarn stitch, this rug uses twice as much of the loops yarn as the base yarn when stitching.  Keep this in mind when purchasing yarn for a larger bath rug.

STEP 1: Select Your Yarn

The loopy stitch used to make this rug can be confusing if you use the same color yarn for the base and the loops.  I highly recommend using a coordinating color for the base yarn and a slightly different color for the loops.

If you use the same color for both the loops and base yarns, it can be hard to see which loops are the base yarn and which are the loops. 

For my rug, I used a solid aqua color for the base and then a variegated aqua, white and grey for the loops.  Two solid colors of yarn can be used, just be sure the colors are at least slightly different.

The advantage of using the variegated loop yarn for the loops is that if I missed a base yarn stitch, I could push it through to the front and it would blend in.

STEP 2: Foundation Row

To start the rug, count out 25 loops in your base (foundation) color.  This is the foundation row.

In each of the 25 base loops, insert two loops of the loops yarn.  This finishes the first row.

STEP 3: ROW TWO

To keep the loops and the base yarn separated, I like to push the loops yarn back towards me and pull the base loops so they are sticking out.  

Next, take the next loop in the base yarn and put it through the last loop with the two loops yarn through it.  Push it through in FRONT of the two loops yarn.

Take the loop just pushed through and pass it THROUGH the two loops in the same stitch.

Continue all the way across the row.  In each stitch insert the next base yarn loop in front of the two loops in the stitch.  Pass that yarn through the loops yarn.

Passing the base loop through the two loops yarn this secures the stitch and those loops so they cannot come out.

The Row is complete.  I recommend counting your loops after each row to make sure you did not miss a loop.  

Step 3: Continue Rows

Repeat row 2 until the rug is complete.  For our rug, we used two skeins of the base yarn and four skeins of the loops yarn.  This made the rug 18" x 28" when complete. The photo above shows the back of the rug partially completed.  And below is the front of the partially completed rug.

You may find a missed loop on the back.  In this case, simply push the loop through to the front of the rug.

If you find that you are missing a base loop along the way, you can add another loop into the rug by putting two base loops in one.   Then work them as they were separate stitches.

Step 3: BIND OFF

To finish off the edge of the rug, bind off.  The bind-off for the loops yarn is done by taking one loop and passing it through the loop next to it.  Continue across the row.

So, if you are working from left to right, take the second loop and pass it through the first loop.  Then take the third loop and pass it through the second one.  Continue all the way across.

When you get to the end, cut open a loop in the remaining yarn and then cut it off.  Tie off to the last loop in the bind-off row.

Trim the extra loops yarn between two loops.

The rug is complete.
