Loop Yarn Stocking Stitch Tutorial (Stockinette Stitch)

Anyone can knit!

A new type of yarn has appeared in stores, loop yarn. Loop yarn features unique preformed loops so no knitting needles are required in order to knit. All you need are your hands.

Right now, there are a least four different brands of loop yarn - Bernat Alize Blanket EZ yarn, Big Twist Loopity Loop Yarn, Red Hearts Loop-It Yarn and Lion Brand Off The Hook Yarn. Links to purchase yarn are at the end of this article.

This loopy, puffy yarn makes it extremely fun, quick and easy to knit blankets, scarfs, pillows, cowls and more. It makes knitting easy and fun for children, pre-teens, teenagers and even adults.

This is the first tutorial in our series of how to knit with loopy yarn. Please watch this video and read on to learn how to knit the stocking stitch which is also known as the stockinette stitch.

HOW TO KNIT THE STOCKING STITCH (STOCKINETTE STITCH) With Loop Yarn

ROW 1 - Loop Yarn FOUNDATION ROW

When knitting with loop yarn you will start with a foundation row. The foundation row is considered row 1. To make the foundation row, on a flat surface count out the number of desired loops according to the pattern. The rest of the yarn is called the working yarn.

In the picture below, my left finger is at the last foundation row loop. My right finger is at the first loop of the working yarn.

ROW 2 - START STITCHING the Row

To begin row 2, take the first loop on the working looped yarn

and insert it through the last loop on the foundation row from back to front.

Position the working loopy yarn above the piece and continue knitting by inserting the next working loop from back to front into the next foundation loop. Do not twist the yarn or loops as you work.

Continue working across the row.

After finishing the second row, do not turn the work over. The right side of the project will always face you. I also suggest at end of each row, visually look at or count the loops to make sure you have not missed any loops or you have not added any additional loops.

ROW 3 - Continue stitching the next row with the loop yarn

Time to begin the third row! Begin again by placing the working loop yarn above the project. Then, insert the working yarn from back to front into each loop down the row.

CONTINUE Stitching ROWS

Continue looping the rows in the same manner as above until the project is complete or you need to attach a new skein of loop yarn.
