A mug rug is more than a coaster. A coaster is only large enough to sit a cup or mug. A mug rug is larger and can accommodate a cup or mug along with a goodie such as a cookie or small edible snack. The size of a mug rug is larger than a coaster but smaller than a placemat. A nice size would be about 5" x 7".

Mug rugs are popular patterns for quilters and sewers, and now Annie's Craft Store has a pattern for knitters. Each mug rug is knitted with U.S. size 8/5mm knitting needles and requires less than 1 skein #4 worsted-weight Premier Yarns Home Cotton or Lily Sugar'n Cream Cotton yarn.
The finished size of the mug rugs is 6 1/2" x 8", excluding fringe.
