Learn how to make a Birdbath Planter

Do you have a cracked birdbath or a birdbath that does not hold water anymore?  Don't throw it away, repurpose it into garden art by turning it into a beautiful flower planter.

INSTRUCTIONS :

STEP 1:

What type of plants can be used for a birdbath planter?  Birdbaths are rather shallow and will probably dry out periodically over the course of the summer.  In addition, location, location, location makes a difference in what should be planted.  Will the planter be in a sunny or shady location?  Will you be able to water the plants regularly? 

If you do not plan on watering regularly, a good choice for plants would be succulents.  Otherwise, shallow-rooted plants can be used.  

I plan on watering my birdbath planter as needed and it is located in a shady area in my garden; so I decided the focal flowers would be begonias with a few succulents and some moss.

 

STEP 2: 

After deciding on the plants, it is time to start the planter by filling the birdbath with potting soil.  You can have the soil level or you can mound it in the middle as I did.

The old birdbath I used leaked and would not hold water.  However, if you decide to use a new birdbath, I would recommend drilling a few holes in the bottom for drainage before filling it with potting soil.

STEP 3: 

With a watering can moisten the potting soil with water. It does not have to be wet; just moisten it.

STEP 4: 

It is time to remove the plants from their pots and arrange them as desired.  With the hand trowel, make holes in the soil and carefully put each plant in the hole.

Since the soil in my birdbath planter is mounded, I don't want the soil to wash out of the planter when it rains or when I water it.  So, I found some moss and placed it around the edge of the birdbath planter to help prevent erosion of the soil.

STEP 5: 

After everything is planted, carefully water the plants. And a reminder, depending on the types of plants used, if it doesn't rain you may have to water them every so often.

I love the way my birdbath planter turned out.  The birdbath planter along with the hostas and daylilies adds curb appeal, brightens the front yard and makes my home more inviting for guest coming to my front door.
