20+ Free Children's and Baby Quilt Patterns and Free Baby Sewing Patterns

Of all of the quilts I enjoy, baby quilts are the best. I think it’s because they are so cute, colorful, and quick!!  I have supplies for two baby quilts that I purchased just because they were so adorable; I have no one to make them for...yet!

On this page, you’ll find many project ideas and free patterns for baby quilts and other baby items, such as bibs, burp cloths, diaper bags, and more.  Make them for yourself or for gifts; like I said, they are so fun to work on.

Quilts

We have a wonderful free pattern for an adorable baby crib quilt using panels or by fussy cutting fabric as accents in the blocks. The quilt features nine quilt blocks with multiple sashing and fence borders at the top and bottom, along with two borders along the sides.

Ours is a Peter Rabbit themed quilt, but it can be revised to accommodate any theme! This free project has a great step-by-step video tutorial, along with a helpful photo tutorial. 

Another free baby quilt pattern and tutorial that is quick and easy to make is one composed of geometric squares of nine-patch blocks made from light and darker fabrics.

The nine-patch blocks are sewn together into strips with sashing in between. It really is a sweet quilt to give as a gift or donate as a community service project.

We have a link to a free PDF baby quilt pattern that is made from a panel combined with simple brick shaped pieces of coordinating prints. These two components make this a quick and simple project.

There is no place on the quilt where you will have seams that intersect within the project. The quilt is made from cozy flannels and is reversible, using coordinating bricks of fabric in a scrappy way on the reverse side.

Another free doll and crib quilt pattern is made with log cabin blocks.  The site has information on log cabin quilts for children where you will find the history of the log cabin quilts, the foundation piecing method, and the suggested fabrics to use.

The log cabin quilt pattern was popular in the late nineteenth century and is becoming popular once again.

The instructions show how to make the quilt scrappy or more coordinated. You could use your own fabric stash or get really into the design by finding reproduction fabrics. 

The crib quilt has 25 blocks, and the doll quilt is made with 4 blocks.  There is a wonderful saw-tooth border on the crib quilt, making it 35 inches square when complete.

You will also find a free crib quilt pattern for the “Cry Baby” quilt, made from the blocks of the same name. It is a cheery quilt, despite the sad name! The quilt is made up of 5.5 inch blocks that are identical with a solid border.

A strip quilt is a quick and easy way to make a beautiful baby quilt.  Even beginners will find this pattern simple and fast!

You can vary this free quilt pattern to fit anyone from an infant to an adult. There is a great tutorial including a video as well. It couldn’t be easier!

We’ve put together a series of YouTube tutorials and written instructions that will teach you how to cut and assemble your blocks, make a backing, layer and pin baste, and finally quilt the top and bind the finished product.

We have also found a wonderful video and written photo tutorial for a warm and cozy flannel rag quilt for a baby.  The quilt top is put together in strips and then the edges are snipped for a well-loved look.  You can make rag quilts in any size, and they will be cherished by all.

Our charming Sailboat Quilt is made with the classic sailboat block pattern.  It’s perfect for a nautical themed nursery or a “just because” gift for the baby.  We have a wonderful free video tutorial to make this fabric stash buster quilt. The baby quilt finishes at 33” x 36”, but of course you can adjust the size by adding more blocks.

Other Fun and Free Patterns for Baby 

We have links to two different free baby bib patterns.  The first tutorial shows how to make cute bibs using the applique technique.  The applique patterns added to the bibs truly make them adorable!

The second free baby bib pattern is made from soft and cozy flannel, and is just right for a new baby’s tender skin. This reversible bib has batting inside the layers of the front and back to help with absorbance. There is a video tutorial and step-by-step written instructions with photos.

The free pattern for a baby wipes cover is also included in our line up. This wipes cover is such a cute way to add style to all of the baby entrapments parents find themselves carrying with them.

This link also has step-by-step instructions to guide you through making a small diaper case to hold a few diapers to stash in the diaper bag.

A free burp cloth pattern using soft flannel fabrics shows how to sew a quick, easy and adorable contoured burp cloth.  This is a beginner sewing pattern and is easy to whip up.

Fabric stores have a wide variety of flannel prints. You’ll have fun choosing prints and making this easy and useful burp cloth.

Everyone loves a homemade diaper bag, and we have found a free pattern for a quilted diaper bag that has everything you could ever want. Because it’s quilted, the diaper bag is very stable.

There are pockets galore for diapers, wipes, snacks, toys, bottles or cups, and even pockets for a parent’s wallet, phone and keys. There are excellent photos and a written tutorial that is easy to follow.

Looking for an accent pillow for the baby’s room?  This free pillow pattern is great for beginners.  We have many free beginner sewing projects, but you can get started right away with this simple baby nine-patch pillow pattern. 

The traditional nine-patch quilt block makes the front of the pillow, and the back has a nice hook and loop closure making cleaning a snap.
