Knit this charming mug rug with its pleasant rustic feel using our free mug rug knitting pattern!
Mug rugs are one of the latest trends in home decor. Today, I'm excited to share with you a new, fun and functional knit project: a farmhouse-style knitted mug rug. This charming rustic mug rug is the perfect companion to use at snack time.
Quick projects like this mug rug add a cozy vibe to your living space while protecting your surfaces from spills and stains. Knitted mug rugs are the perfect accent for the knitter's home.
Our mug rug pattern (which is free) features streaks of purl stitches on a stockinette stitch front. The stockinette stitch is perfect for mug rugs since it lays flat. Even though the stockinette stitch makes a flat fabric, the edges tend to curl. We've added a border of garter stitches that frame the knit mug rug and prevents curling.
Mug rugs make great gifts when paired with a cute mug and a packet of cocoa or coffee!

WHAT YOU NEED to make the knit mug rug:
the yarn
The yarn I used here was a cotton worsted weight yarn (#4) because of its absorbency. However different yarn types can be used but you do want to choose the same weight category.
Another thing I love about this simple project is you can use leftover and scrap yarn for the whole mug rug.
