This Spooky Stockings free machine embroidery design is a wonderful addition to your Halloween decorations.  This Halloween quilt block pattern can be finished into a small wall hanging and features witch legs with colorful stockings and a tulle skirt.

The design by Designs in Machine Embroidery (DIME) makes such a cute little wall hanging and can be completed in an afternoon!

Tips for making the Spooky Stockings quilt block

STEP 1: Download free design Files

The spooky stocking quilt block is a free design available from Designs in Machine Embroidery (DIME).  Place the free design in your cart and checkout.  

During the checkout process, you will not be charged for the design.  You will need to give DIME your email address.  After checkout, look for the confirmation email and a link to download the design files.

The design includes both 5x7 and 10x10 instructions and files, layout documents, and embroidery designs in many formats.

Unzip the design files to a directory on your computer.  

STEP 2: Cut and Assemble the background Fabric

The background of the design is made up of orange and grey fabrics.  A diagram in the PDF Instructions will specify how to cut and sew together the background fabrics.

STEP 3: Printout the Layout document

In the design files directory for 5x7 or 10x10, there will be a layout document.  Print this layout document and use it to help align the individual designs onto the block.

STEP 4: Embroider the Designs

The project comes with 5 separate embroidery files for the spiders, witch legs, broom, mouse and stretching cat.  The layout PDF is used to help align each design as you load and stitch them.

Hoop the background fabric and cut away stabilizer in the hoop.  You will rehoop the background fabric several times to stitch the different sections of the block.

I started with the witch legs section and hooped the fabric a bit off-center. After loading the witch legs design, use the design alignment buttons to move the design into the correct location to stitch on the block.

The black dress underneath is a machine-appliqued piece of fabric. The design steps will stitch a placement stitch for the dress.  Place a piece of black fabric completely covering the placement stitch.  Then stitch the tack down stitch.  Trim the fabric close to the stitching.

The stockings and shoes are machine embroidered with thread.

After stitching the witch legs section, I rehooped the fabric so that I could stitch the broom & mouse.  The alignment printout can help you get the designs placed into the correct locations of your block.

Once the mouse & broom were stitched, I again rehooped the fabric so I could stitch the spiders and the stretching cat.

Once the stitching is completed, trim the block as instructed.

STEP 5: Adding the Tulle

The tulle is added after the embroidery is finished and sewn down to the block.

Cut the piece of tulle to the size specified in the instructions.  I sewed a basting stitch across the long edge of the tulle about 1/4" in from the edge. 

Using this basting thread, I gathered the tulle and placed it over the witch's black dress.

I stitched the tulle down with a basting stitch close to the top edge of the design.  The tulle will be held down completely once the border is added.

The design instructions give a different way of attaching the tulle, so you have the option to use either way!

STEP 6: Adding the Borders

Cut the fabrics needed for the borders and then sew them to the block as directed in the instructions.

Iron the borders pressing the seam allowances in one direction.  Try to not crush the tulle while ironing.

Step 7: Backing the Quilt Block

I decided to add a simple backing to my block instead of using the sew-any-shape foam and stand. 

Cut a backing piece 1/2" larger than the width & height of the trimmed quilt block.

Lay the backing piece on top of the block with the right sides together.  Stitch around the block with a 1/4" seam allowance leaving a 2" - 3" opening for turning.

Turn the block right side out, and push out the corners with a chopstick, pencil, or another pointed tool.  Press around the block without crushing the tulle and folding in the seam along the opening.

Step 7: Finishing the quilt block

Topstitch around the block 1/8" - 1/4" from the block edge.  This topstitching will close the opening used for turning the block.

The block is finished at this point, but some additional quilting can be added.  I decided to add some quilting around the orange background fabric and along the purple border.

Hanging loops can be added to the back to hang up the block.
