Hanging Hand Towel with Kam Snaps

Learn how to make any hand towel into a hanging towel by adding Kam snaps. This is a simple no sewing required way to convert a towel so it will hang and not fall on the floor.

Do your kitchen or bathroom hand towels end up on the floor all the time?  Change them into hanging towels by adding Kam snaps!  This is a quick and easy way to change a towel into a hanging towel with a snap.  As an added bonus, there is no sewing required for this method!

I thought of the idea for these towels after seeing this Farmhouse Striped Kitchen Towel by A Crocheted Simplicity.  This wrap-around towel is a perfect way to keep the towel hanging and not falling on the floor.  But I wanted a no sewing required way to make the towel into a hanging towel.  This led me to use Kam Snaps instead of a button.

INSTRUCTIONS to install Kam snaps to make hanging towels

Step 1: Select towels

Hand or Kitchen sized towels work best for this project.  Bath towels would be quite heavy and would not work well. 

Select towels to be converted into hanging towels.  Almost any purchased kitchen or bathroom towel will work.  I have used purchased dishtowels and also machine embroidered towels for this project.

Decorative kitchen towels make the best gifts, so look in the stores or online for some towels that coordinate with the gift receivers' decor or personality.  Add the snaps and make them into hanging towels.

STEP 2: SELECT YOUR SNAPS

Select snaps that coordinate with the colors on the towel.  We have selected white for this towel.  White is always a good option if there are no other coordinating colors in your snap collection. 

For one hanging towel, you will need four snap pieces.  Select two pointed pieces, a socket, and a stud as shown below.

STEP 3: Fold the towel

The snaps will be installed on the TOP of the towel.  This is the side that would hang over the bar and be in the back when hanging.  Be sure you are adding the snaps to the top if there is a directional or printed pattern on the towel.

Fold the towel in half lengthwise and match up the sides and top edges.  The top edges of this towel are at the bottom of the photo.

Use the Awl which comes with the Kam Snap Starter Set, to poke a hole in the towel near the corner.  Poke the hole where the snaps will be installed.

STEP 4: Install snaps Left side

To install the Kam snaps on the left side of the towel, select a pointed piece and either the socket or the stud.  The socket is shown below.  The towel is showing the top left corner.

The snaps must be installed in opposite directions in order for the towel to snap correctly.  So on one side, the pointed piece with face down and the other side the pointed piece will face up.

On the left, install the snap with the pointed side facing DOWN.  So, place the pointed snap piece through from the front of the towel so the point is facing away from you.  You will want to turn over the towel after putting the pointed piece through.

Place the socket piece on the back of the towel with the point through the hole in the center of the socket.

Use the Kam Snap pliers to carefully and firmly press the snap together.  Slide pointed piece flat side down into the black well in the pliers.  Be sure it's centered properly and in the black well.  

Press the pliers straight down firmly.  Try not to twist or turn while pressing down.  Hold the pliers straight.  

The left side Kam Snap is installed.  The photo below is showing the front of the towel with the flat side of the Kam snap on the top.

This is the backside of the towel flipped up to show the other side of the snap.  Notice how the pointed part has been squished down in the center of the snap.

STEP 5: Install snaps right side

To install the Kam snaps on the right side of the towel, select a pointed piece and either the socket or the stud.  Remember you need one socket and one stud.  The stud is shown below.  The towel is showing the top right corner.

The snap pieces also need to be facing opposite directions.  So, be sure to install this side by putting the pointed piece from the back of the towel to the front so the point is facing towards you. 

Install the snap in the same manner as the other side of the towel using the snap pliers to press the snap together.

Below is the snap installed on the right side.  Notice the stud side is on the front of the towel.  The flat side is on the back of the towel.

STEP 5: Test Snaps

It's important to test the snaps once they have been installed on the towel.  Snap and un-snap the snap several times to make sure the snap is installed securely.  

Sometimes when you use the snap the first few times, it could come apart if it's not installed properly.  Testing the snapping ensures that it's installed properly.

If the snap comes apart, you may be able to put it back together and use the pliers to press it more firmly together.  Other times, you may need to start again with a new set.

Your towel is complete and ready for hanging.

STEP 6: Hang the towel

To hang the towel, place the towel over the bar of a stove or other handle with several inches hanging over the back.  Simply wrap the corners around in front of the towel and snap the snap together.  

The hanging kitchen towel is now hanging and will not easily fall!
