T-Shirt Quilt - Quilting the top

Learn how to machine quilt a t-shirt quilt or any quilt with straight-line quilting.

Straight-line quilting can be diagonal lines that run parallel to each other across the entire quilt top or straight lines that are stitched vertically and/or horizontally across the quilt top.

Some helpful tips on how to machine quilt any quilt.

Tip #1: Use a walking foot because it will evenly feed the layers of fabric and batting through the machine.

Tip #2: If you are straight line quilting, you can attach the walking foot guide bar for sewing the lines. After sewing the initial marked line, you will use the guide bar to sew the other lines.

Tip #3: Increase the stitch length to about 8 to 10 stitches per inch.

Tip #4: Fill several extra bobbins with thread so if you run out of bobbin thread you do not have to stop quilting to fill a bobbin. Just insert the next bobbin into the machine.

Tip #5: Use machine quilting thread.

Tip #6: Quilting will progress easier if you have a large work surface, so the quilt does not hang off the table.

Let's start straight line quilting

STEP 1: Place the marked quilt line under the walking foot. If you begin stitching in the batting you do not have to back tack. Begin stitching in a straight line following the marked line until you get to the other end of the quilt.

As you stitch, remove any safety pins that may be in the way.

STEP 2: To machine quilt the next line, use the previous line of stitches as a guide.

Place the quilt so the guide bar is lined up with the previous stitched line. (Refer to the following photo.) Start sewing the next line but as you sew look at the guide bar/stitched line not the needle.

STEP 3:

Continue machine quilting line after line, by moving the guide bar to the line of stitches you previously completed.

Complete one half of the quilt, then turn the quilt and complete the other half.

Machine quilting a quilt using this technique is easy. TRY IT!
