Today, I’m here with a fun in-the-hoop machine embroidery project. These Christmas machine embroidery designs are crazy patch ornaments. I made these ornaments in-the-hoop with my embroidery machine and designs purchased from Designs by Juju.
I have four designs: the Christmas tree, mitten, stocking, and heart. These ornaments are quick, easy to make, and perfect for using scrap fabric or a charm pack.
If you are here looking for the Crazy Patch Lace Heart Ornament for Valentine's Day, there is an update specific to this project near the end of this page.

About the Crazy Patch Designs
These ornaments are completed in the hoop, which means they are finished and only need to be trimmed around the outside with pinking shears after stitching is complete. The stitch time on these ornaments is about 5 – 6 minutes. Because of the trimming and adding fabrics, the ornaments will take a bit longer, around 20 – 30 minutes.
Other crazy patch designs from Designs by Juju are gingerbread, star, bell, snowflake, snowman, finial, ornament, and Santa hat. The regular price for these designs is $7 each, but Designs by Juju regularly has sales, so wait for a sale and purchase them much cheaper.
The designs come in three hoop sizes, 4x4, 5x7, and 6x10, and files are available for most embroidery machines. The following formats are available: ART, DST, EXP, JEF, HUS, PCS, PES, SEW, VIP, VP3 & XXX.
Each design includes a printable PDF step-by-step photo tutorial, thumbnail PDF, and color chart PDF.

Making the ornaments
Since Designs by Juju includes a step-by-step photo tutorial for every purchase, this article will only show some photos of the basic steps in making one of the ornaments.
The tear-away stabilizer is hooped, and the first stitch is a placement stitch for the batting. The batting is placed to cover the placement stitch, stitched down, and trimmed.
The steps for machine applique embroidery designs will include a placement stitch for each fabric and a tack-down stitch. Below is the placement stitch for the first fabric.
Place the fabric and stitch. Trim close to the inner seams.
After stitching the following placement line, place the next fabric with a seam allowance.
Open the fabric and finger-press the seam. Stitch the decorative stitching.
Continue to stitch the steps (placement, tack down, decorative stitches) until all fabrics are placed. A placement stitch will indicate where to tape the ribbon on the back. Stitch the ribbon.
Add the backing fabric to the back of the hoop and tape it in place.
If you are making the heart ornament with lace, see the update below BEFORE stitching the last step. Stitch the final stitch around the edge of the ornament.
Remove the ornament from the hoop and carefully tear away the stabilizer.
Pinking shears give these ornaments a nice decorative edge and help prevent them from fraying. Trim around the ornament.
Be careful not to cut off the ribbon for the hanging loop.
The ornament is complete! Here is the front.
And the back.
These ornaments will be fun decorations for holiday packages and gift bags.
Update: Crazy Patch Lace Heart Ornaments
The heart ornaments are stitched in the same way as the other ornaments on this page. To add the lace around the edge, add the lace before stitching the final stitch step.
Before the Final Stitch Step
The instructions for this step are to add the backing fabric on the back of the hoop and tape it in place. After adding the backing, tape the lace along the stitching line before returning the hoop to the machine.
Start taping the lace at the point and continue around the heart. Use tape specific for machine embroidery projects. My favorite tape is the RK Embroidery Perfection Tape. This tape can be removed easily after stitching.
The lace should cover the stitching line around the edge of the heart. Fold the lace nicely at the top of the heart and tape it in place. Then, continue around the rest of the heart. At the point, fold the end of the lace under a bit.
Place the hoop back into the machine and stitch the final step.
Remove the tape and finish the heart by trimming with pinking shears. Be careful not to cut the lace or the hanging ribbon.
