WHAT YOU NEED to make a hand-drawn heart balloon greeting card
INSTRUCTIONS to make a DIY heart balloon greeting card
STEP 1: Cut a heart shape from scrap paper
Use a pattern to make a neat heart-shaped balloon. Fold the 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" scrap cardstock or construction paper in half.
Cut a heart out of the folded piece of scrap paper along the fold.
Step 2: Trace the heart template on the card
Begin by placing the blank card with the opening on the right.
Since this will be a balloon, the heart shape will be near the top of the front of the card.
Center the scrap paper heart near the top of the card. Using the pencil, lightly trace around the heart pattern.
step 3: draw small hearts around the perimeter of the heart
Begin at the bottom point of the heart. Using the pencil, draw two small hearts with their pointed ends, making the large heart's bottom point.
Do the same with the center of the top of the heart. With the pencil, make two small hearts, with their pointed ends touching to make a sharp point.
Continue drawing hearts around the outline of the large heart, keeping them evenly spaced and close enough together to keep the heart shape visible. The hearts can go in all different directions around the large heart outline.
STEP 4: Outline the hearts
Using the fine-tipped black permanent marker, carefully trace around the small hearts just made on the outline of the larger heart. Work slowly and keep the heart shapes neat.
Step 5: Draw small hearts to fill in the Balloon
Using the pencil, draw small hearts that are the same size as the small hearts framing the large heart. Make sure these hearts face different directions. Fill in the heart shape with the small hearts.
Once that is finished, use the fine-tipped permanent marker to trace around all of the pencil hearts that were just made. A smaller heart can be added if there is a wide open space.
Step 6: draw the balloon string
Place the ruler vertically from the heart's bottom tip and the bottom of the card.
This will be the string on the balloon. Using the pencil, lightly trace a straight line with the ruler.
Step 7: color the small hearts
The small hearts need to be filled in with markers to make the card colorful. This card will have all red hearts and the special message "I love you."
The colors of the hearts are personal preference. They can be all one color or multi-colored, like confetti. Birthday cards look very nice with multi-colored hearts.
Color in all of the small hearts.
Step 8: write the sentiment on the line
The sentiment will be made to look like the string of the balloon. Choose a sweet message.
Turn the card so the fold is at the top. Put the permanent marker at the line where it touches the bottom of the card.
Trace a small portion of the pencil line before writing the sentiment. Write your greeting, being sure not to lift the marker from the card. Continue the line along the pencil line before starting the next word, leaving a space between the words.
When the sentiment ends, keep the marker on the paper and trace along the straight line up to the bottom tip of the large heart. You may want to practice this on scrap paper first.
Step 9: Erase the pencil markings
Place the card on the work surface and rub it with the pink eraser, making sure to erase all of the pencil markers. Examine the card closely and, if necessary, erase some more until all the pencil lines are gone.
Your heart balloon greeting card is finished and ready to be written on the inside and placed in the matching envelope.
