Stamping designs on paper or other surfaces is fun for both kids and adults. This page is devoted to ways to make stamps for imprinting.
Stamps can be purchased at craft stores and many other places as well. However, creating a one-of-a-kind stamp is exciting and takes stamping up a couple of notches!
Making stamps for kids
There’s something so fun about dipping a stamp in a puddle of paint or pounding the stamp back and forth between stamp pad and paper, making marks all over the page.
Kids love this activity! Homemade stamps can be made with many random materials for kids to use. To keep the mess down, a handle for the stamp is pretty important.
What can be used for handles on stamps?
Try these ideas for making handles for kids to use:
- Corks
- Rocks
- Wooden blocks
- Bottle caps
- Foam pieces
- Pieces of fruit have their own handles!
Simply let the kiddos stamp with the "handles" or glue a foam shape to the handles and a stamp is made!
Making stamps for adults
Stamping for adults can be more intricate and detailed. Carving your own stamps is so fun and not nearly as difficult as may be expected.
Supplies for making your own stamps are relatively inexpensive, and it is a great way to add a personal touch to gift cards, wrapping paper, and scrapbook projects.
A handle will be needed to carve stamps. Most folks use a block of wood for this purpose. However, foam blocks and other household items can be used.
To carve stamps, the artist will start with a template for the stamp. Sharp tools are used to carve the design onto a piece of rubber, and the rubber is then glued to the handle.
There is a link below to a tutorial showing how to carve lovely vintage stamps. The designs look beautiful, and the procedure for carving the rubber doesn’t look difficult.
When I think of stamping, stenciling always comes to mind as it is the opposite of stamping. Learn all about stenciling here.
