DIY Mosaic Art Ideas

I once took a class on making a mosaic, and I found it to be one of the most enjoyable projects.  The instructor had containers of different colored pieces of pottery to use in our mosaic art projects and designs. The tile pieces were made from colored plates she found at thrift stores and then cracked into a variety of pieces and shapes on her sidewalk.

My mosaic project was a handled tray set with pottery shards on the base. It became a precious gift for my mom.

What is a mosaic?

A mosaic is a pattern or picture made up of tiny regular and irregular pieces of colored stones, terracotta, glass, ceramics or marble held in place by mortar or plaster.  The picture covers a surface, and the pieces are usually inlaid. Mosaics were popular in Ancient Rome as decorations on floors and walls.

Now many items are decorated with mosaic designs or pictures. To learn more about the art of making mosaics, take a look at our general mosaic page.

What are some uses of mosaic tiles?

Mosaic tiles can be used to decorate:

  • Walls
  • Flooring
  • Table tops
  • Furniture
  • Dishware
  • Garden items
  • Trivets
  • Flower pots and vases
  • Mosaic art ideas
  • And so much more!

There are a variety of DIY mosaic art projects on this page, and people of all ages can enjoy them.

The kiddos will have fun with the mosaic sidewalk chalk project below from Down Red Bud Drive.  This activity is sure to keep them busy on a warm summer day. After one rain, the chalk mosaic disappears, providing a fresh new canvas!

Because the project materials are usually waterproof, many objects can be made for outdoor use.

Make a bee and butterfly watering bowl for the flower garden.  These look so pretty and colorful among the spring and summer flowers planted around the house.

A unique mosaic craft is the Mod Podge Flower Pot.  Instead of using hard tiles, colored paper cut in various shapes is glued to a mini flower pot with Mod Podge as the grout. Mod Podge comes in an outdoor/waterproof version that would be great for this.

When looking at the paper mosaic flower pot,  I imagined fabric instead of paper.  I’m not the only one with that idea!  In one project below, felt is used as the art medium for mosaic candle holders from Moms and Crafters.
