My favorite quilting project idea for back to school is creating a backpack! As the kids get older, they want something stylish to carry, and parents want something sturdy for them to carry.

What is the best fabric for a backpack?
There are many popular fabric choices for making backpacks. Backpacks are usually made of nylon, polyester, polypropylene, canvas, and cotton.
One of the most popular materials in today’s backpacks is nylon. Nylon is strong, is fine in most temperatures, and resists scratches and marring.
Polyester is also a very popular material used to make backpacks. It is water-resistant, fast drying, and is both strong and lightweight.
Polypropylene is very strong and resistant to tears, and the fabric is water resistant as well. However, polypropylene is mostly used in less expensive backpacks.
Canvas is also very popular in backpacks that will get heavy use. It has gained popularity since its decline after much use in making backpacks in the 1950s and 1960s.
In the past, canvas was made of heavy cotton, which made the backpack itself heavy. Now canvas backpacks are made of a variety of fibers making it lighter than in the past.
Canvas is still very durable and long lasting even though backpacks are not often made with the heavy cottons of the past.
Quilting cotton is the material used for the very fashionable, brand-name and high-end luxury backpacks. The quilted cotton in a variety of beautiful colored fabrics is very popular for both everyday wear and school backpacks.
These popular backpacks are quite costly, but can easily be made at home as a back to school DIY project for a lot less money.
These expensive quilted cotton fashions include other items such as pencil cases, laptop covers, and lunchboxes. There is no sense investing your money in these expensive store bought items though!
