Useful Quilted DIY Kitchen Decor and Other Kitchen Projects

I’ve  heard over and over that the most used room in the house is the kitchen. I actually moved to a new home almost a year ago, and that room still needs a boost. It happens to be the last room in my house to get decorated and splashed with color.

Let’s brighten up your most used room in the house with some awesome and free kitchen  projects. You will love these quilted DIY kitchen decor items for your home. These kitchen projects also make perfect gifts for birthdays, the  holidays, and housewarming.

We have an extensive list of free projects on this page that range from very simple and quick, to kitchen projects that take more time and are a bit more complex.  Even the easy and quick kitchen projects will make a huge impact on your kitchen decor and will make very nice gifts.!

Coasters and Mug Rugs

I was not familiar with mug rugs until I received one as a gift from a sewing friend.  I cannot believe I ever lived without it!  If you aren’t sure what a mug rug is, I’ll give a short description.

A mug rug is a mini quilt that is larger than a coaster but smaller than a placemat. They are most often between 4” x 7’ and 12’ x 8”, but you can make them any size you want. The idea is to have room for a mug and a snack.

My favorite and most used mug rug, also called a mug mat, is 5” x 7”.  It’s just the perfect size for the corner of the end table in my favorite spot to sip tea.

Coasters and mug rugs are a great place to start with your DIY kitchen decor; they are small and don’t take too much time, and most of them are very simple but make a huge impact.

We have many free patterns below for mug rugs. I just love this simple yet DIY kitchen decor. Take a look at our Jelly Roll Mug Rug

It is so easy to make, since you use your precut jelly roll strips. Ours was made with a cute line of bee fabric, but you could use any theme or color jelly roll!

I’ve made it a point that everyone uses a coaster in our home, and we have a nice list of free coaster patterns for you on this page.

You’ll love the chance to use up your scraps on these little kitchen projects, and they are my go-to handmade gift.

The Hexagon Coaster is so unique and is a wonderful kitchen project. Hexies are put together using English Paper Piecing, which sounds intimidating, but it’s really quite simple.

It's done as hand work, so you have a great project to take on the go!  You end up with a lovely flower shaped coaster.

Tablecloths and Placemats

You’ll love the free tablecloth patterns for a DIY kitchen decor project!  Perk up your dining room table with the lively, floral tablecloth with a built in table runner design by making the Sew A Tablecloth project.

I love the floral fabric they used in the tutorial!  And to top it off, they cut out some of the flowers, added felt backing, and made napkin rings to match!

The Dresden Placemat is so unique and would look great on a round or oblong table. Using the Dresden quilt block pattern, you can create something elaborately beautiful for your DIY kitchen decor.

Kitchen Towels

I need a kitchen towel attached to my oven handle at all times!  No sliding off the handle or towel rack with the Kitchen Towel With Quilted Holder! This towel snaps right on my oven handle, ready to be put to work and never ending up on the kitchen floor.

Don’t miss the Prairie Point Tea Towels!  These are the sweetest tea towels ever.  Use store-bought towels and make DIY kitchen decor by embellishing them using a prairie point design that is so popular in quilting. I just love these!

More Ideas!

This would go on forever if I told you about all of the fabulous free kitchen project patterns below.  Trust me when I tell you that you must take a peek!  You’ll find things like aprons, tea cozies, hot pads, oven mitts, and potholders!
