Abbreviations - Crochet


After learning the basic crochet stitches, it is time to start crocheting a project. Reading a crochet pattern can be confusing with all the abbreviations and terms used.

The following list of standard crochet abbreviations and terms and their meanings should be helpful.

Crochet Master Abbreviations List

  • Alt = Alternate
  • Approx. = Approximately
  • Beg = Begin or Beginning
  • Bet = Between
  • BL = Back loop
  • BP = Back post
  • BPdc = Back Post double crochet
  • BPsc = Back Post single crochet
  • BBO = Back bar only
  • BLO = Back loop only
  • cc = Contrasting color
  • ch(s) = Chain(s)
  • ch-sp = Chain space
  • Cl = cluster
  • cont = Continue
  • dc = Double crochet
  • dc2tog = Double crochet two stitches together
  • dec = Decrease
  • dtr = Double treble crochet
  • ea = Each
  • FL = Front Loop(s)
  • FP = Front Post
  • FPdc = Front Post double crochet
  • FPsc = Front Post single crochet
  • FPtr = Front Post treble crochet
  • hdc = Half double crochet
  • inc = Increase
  • Lp = Loop
  • MC = Main Color
  • pat = Pattern
  • pm = Place marker
  • prev = Previous
  • rem = Remaining
  • rep = Repeat
  • rev sc = Reverse single crochet
  • RS = Right side
  • sc = Single crochet
  • sc2tog = Single crochet two stitches together
  • sk = Skip
  • sl = Slip
  • sl st = Slip stitch
  • sp(s) = Space(s)
  • st(s) = Stitch(es)
  • tbl = Through back loop
  • tch = Turning chain
  • tog = Together
  • tr = Treble crochet
  • trtr = Triple treble crochet
  • WS = Wrong side
  • yo = yarn over hook

Symbols List

  • [ ] = Repeat directions inside brackets as many times as indicated
  • ( ) = Work directions inside parentheses into stitch indicated
  • * = Repeat directions following the single asterisk as directed
  • ** = Repeat directions between the asterisks as many times as indicated
  • " = Inch(es)
